Conversations with UCLA Campus Celeb – Amy Lee

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCLA chapter.

If you don’t already know Amy Lee of Vagabond Youth – then you will now.

This UCLA Campus Celebrity is known on and off campus, especially in social media. Amy Lee, a 3rd year Communications major, is the founder and CEO of her vintage boutique, Vagabond Youth. This Los Angeles native who hails from Cerritos, CA has had a love for beauty, DIY projects, and thrifting, alongside launching her vlog, also named Vagabond Youth in YouTube since 2011.

A Celebrity in her own right, Amy currently has 155,152 subscribers in YouTube, 24k followers in Instagram and at the same time manages her online shop.  Just recently collaborating with the Korean beauty brand, Memebox, this stylish Bruin beauty has already done amazing things with her music inspired outfits and articles both online and being part of other campus clubs. Along with her cool, hardworking, and artistic personality – they are clearly seen not only in person, but in her videos as well.

Here’s my conversation with Amy Lee.

What are some new projects you’ve worked on recently?

A.L.  I worked on creating my own makeup beauty box, a Memebox, for one of Korea’s largest beauty retailers that just got released. I’m currently working with a few different brands to produce some fun content for my  viewers but I don’t think I’m allowed to say the names!

What are some clubs or other activities outside of campus you are involved in?

A.L.  I’m trying to be really involved this year because I love UCLA and its campus. This year, I’m involved with the Campus Events Commission, Cultural Affairs Commission, the Hammer Student Association, and a few other clubs.

What is your current style muse?

A.L.  I don’t have a style muse but generally I’ve been really loving minimalism. Light wash denim and red lips are key to the look I feel like.

Do you have a favorite style icon(s)? And how have they influenced your own sense of style?

A.L.  I don’t have any favorite style icons but people I’m really digging currently are Mø, FKA Twigs, and the Haim sisters. I love being influenced by musicians because they really affect how I feel and the way I dress is all about my vibe or how I’m feeling that day.

How has Youtube helped in you as a fashionista? How has it been juggling school/social life/Youtube?

A.L.  It’s given me a lot more confidence to wear what I want. It’s also made me a lot more bold. If it’s a little bit more off or unusual, I’m more inclined to wear it, especially because crazy colors and bold prints look way cooler on camera. It’s been hard to juggle school and a social life but because YouTube is not my number one priority or goal in life, I think I have a great balance between the three. I live a really normal university student’s life with the weird glitz and glam of the YouTube beauty world, going to class all day and beauty conventions at night.

Any advice for those who consider in being a famous Youtube Fashionista like yourself?

A.L.  Just go for it. Stop questioning yourself. Find what you love and talk about it. Don’t look back and just run.

If you had a chance to work or collaborate in any Fashion Designer or brand(s) (i.e. clothing, make-up, etc.) who would you chose?

A. L.  My dream collaboration would be to work with Alexander Wang. He’s one of my favorite designers and I’ve loved his pieces since I was 11.
