7 Things College Ladies Actually Want this Holiday Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCLA chapter.

Ahhh, Finals Week is finally upon us. But after one more week of pain and misery we will finally be able to relax, catch up with family and friends, and prepare for what next quarter has in store for us (or completely block out any thoughts of anything school related; I like that option, actually). While the holiday season may be stress-free, merry, and bright, my mom asked me a question recently that I couldn’t really answer: “What do you want for Christmas?” If I were a little girl, this would have been the easiest question to answer in the entire world; the pinkest and sparkliest Barbie around, or the newest Pokemon game, whichever. However, as we are approaching adulthood, this question has become incredibly difficult to answer, because most of the things that we want are not really presents or are things that can’t be given to us by our parents or grandparents. Here is a list of things that college ladies actually want this holiday season.

1. MONEY

This one you could technically ask for, but it is not the most socially acceptable thing to put on your holiday wish list. The later it gets in the quarter, the less money there is in my bank account. Seriously, where did all of it go? All I’ve purchased in the past two months are coffee and food! Oh, wait… that actually makes sense now.

2. Not being asked about our futures

While many freshman have a few years of bliss before they will be bombarded with this question at every social function that they attend, we upperclassman do not have this luxury. It would be amazing if this question just disappeared during the holiday season, because most of us have absolutely no idea what paths lie before us once we graduate from college. Being asked about it only makes the prospect of the real world even more terrifying.

3. Episodes being added to Netflix immediately after airing

I don’t know about you guys, but I don’t always start watching shows right when they begin being aired on tv. I usually start a show only after a number of people have told me that it is worth watching after it has been on for a few seasons. When I actually find a show that I really like (read: most of them), I try to catch up with the series on Netflix so that I can watch the show when it airs each week like a normal human being. Netflix, however, makes this very difficult. Most seasons of currently airing shows do not allow Netflix to add the most current season to the site until a few days before the new season airs or waits until the new season is halfway through, leaving you, once again, out of the loop. While binge-watching Netflix is almost a second major to most of us, getting through a season of a show in two or three days is extremely challenging. It would be wonderful if that did not happen anymore!

4. Calories not counting during the many holiday meals that are consumed

Some of the most wonderful things about the holiday season are the delicious foods and drinks that are customarily consumed; pies, cocktails, bread, and tons of butter. What isn’t great is all the weight that can be gained from partaking in the delicious assortment of treats listed above. It would be a holiday miracle if all of those calories just magically disappeared from our favorite foods allowing us to really indulge.

5. The perfect boyfriend, Bryan Gosling, or you know any boyfriend at all.

Now I know what you are thinking, “Ashley, don’t you mean RYAN Gosling?” My answer to that question is ABSOLUTELY NOT. While he is undeniably gorgeous, Ryan is an A-List celebrity who already has a child with a beautiful actress, so to say he is unattainable is the understatement of the year. Bryan Gosling is his (entirely fictional) younger brother who is just as attractive as his famous big bro but is way more approachable due to his uncanny ability to stay out of the spotlight. While pursuing his life-long dream of becoming a doctor, he still makes time for you and happily watches all of those stupid and unrealistic romantic movies with you, even The Notebook. In all seriousness though, having any guy who is willing to cuddle up on the couch and watch a rom-com at all would be good enough for most of us.

6. Shoes that don’t hurt but make us look amazing

Heels make your legs look long and amazing, but slippers are the comfiest things in the world. Wouldn’t it be magical if there were a pair of shoes out there that had the esthetically pleasing effect on your legs of high-heels while also feeling like you are walking on clouds like your favorite bunny slippers? I would take one pair in every color, maybe two…

7. Magically gaining the ability to contour

I have seen so many videos about the dramatic changes that contouring with make-up can make to your face that it is ridiculous. However, even after watching and reading countless tutorials about doing it yourself, the results of my attempts still resemble how I imagine a five-year old would apply make-up. If I woke up this Christmas morning with the ability to contour like a pro I would be incredibly happy.
