7 Swoon-Worthy Literary Characters for Valentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCLA chapter.

Cuddle up with a good book this Valentine’s Day! If you’re not going out this Valentine’s day, why not relax at home with a glass of your favorite drink, a handful (or more) of chocolate and a book with a dreamy male lead?

To help you get started, here’s our top seven favorite literary male characters.

7. Edward Cullen from the “Twilight” Saga

Okay, so, this is our guilty-pleasure read. While many love to voice their frustrations with the book, at one point we were so in love with it? So what makes Edward such a swoon worthy character? Besides his sparkly skin, he has some amazing lines. “And so the lion fell in love with the lamb.” He is literally in pain all the time he’s with Bella; something about that sort of perseverance in the name of love is super endearing.

6. Jay Gatsby from “The Great Gatsby”

Loyal, Sophisticated and good at throwing parties. What more could a girl ask for? “There must have been moments even that afternoon when Daisy tumbled short of his dreams — no through her own fault but because of the colossal vitality of his illusion. It had gone beyond her, beyond everything. He had thrown himself into it with a creative passion…”

5. Draco from the “Harry Potter” Series

Sure, he’s a bully and a whiner… and has ties to the Dark Lord! We all have out faults. Draco Malfoy gives off this “I’m broken and cold” type vibe that makes us just want to fix that cold heart of his. “Longbottom, if brains were gold, you’d be poorer than Weasley, and that’s saying something.” Swoon-worthy.

4. Howl from “Howl’s Moving Castle”

There’s a gorgeous young wizard said to, “eat the hearts of beautiful young women.” Along with being incredibly vain, “I see no point in living if I can’t be beautiful,” he’s quite the charmer,” “Yes, you are nosy. You’re a dreadfully nosy, horribly bossy. Control yourself. You’re victimizing us all.” His constant bickering will leave you dying of laughter and wanting more.

3. Park from “Eleanor and Park”

He loves comic books, punk music and wearing eyeliner. He would spin-kick someone in the face to defend your honor. And has the best lines ever. “She never looked nice. She looked like art, and art wasn’t supposed to look nice; it was supposed to make you feel something.” “I just meant that… I want to be the last person who ever kisses you, too…. That sounds bad, like a death threat or something. What I’m trying to say is, you’re it. This is it for me.”

4. Mr. Darcy from “Pride and Prejudice”

He shows us that love conquers all. By falling in love with someone beneath his class, he reveals that shallow characteristics of a person like social status and class are unimportant. He always speaks his mind, showing how intelligent he is but also reveals a softer, caring side when it comes to family.

“In vain I have struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.”

5. Mr. Rocherster from “Jane Eyre”

He’s rude and mysterious. Yet underneath this façade of bitterness he is a kind and loving person. If you were stuck in the Victorian era, he would value your intelligence and independence, treating you as an equal, and there’s nothing better than someone recognizing you for what you’re worth.

“And your will shall decide your destiny,” he said. “I offer you my hand, my heart, and a share of all my possessions…I ask you to pass through life at my side — to be my second self and best earthly companion.”

“My bride is here,” he said, again drawing me to him, “because my equal is here, and my likeness. Jane, will you marry me?”

Swoon.
