7 Realities All Seniors Have to Face

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCLA chapter.

Can I just stay here forever?

1. Having to think about the real world

Seniors are almost constantly bombarded with questions about what they plan on doing after graduation. If you have a plan, then it is exciting to tell people about it! But if you are one of the many Seniors who are still figuring things out, it gets tiring and embarrassing telling people that your plans are still up in the air. You’d much rather talk about anything else, like, uh, the Royal Baby? Yeah, let’s talk about the Royal Baby, because SHE is adorable.

2. Getting a job

In this job market, it is a momentous feat to be graduating from college with a well paying job on the line. Many have to resort to unpaid internships to get more experience. Unfortunately, most jobs expect (or greatly prefer) that you have experience, so if you’ve never had a job, then you are trapped in a vicious cycle. Does binge watching all of Gossip Girl in a few weeks count as something to put on my resume? No? Well, it should. Because that took a lot of time and effort on my part!

3. …Or going to school

Maybe you decided that in this abysmal job market that you wanted to have more education under your belt to make you a more attractive job candidate, or maybe you’ve had this plan all along, either way, trying to get into grad school is just as stressful as looking for a job. Taking more standardized tests, getting letters of recommendation, facing rejections or, even more daunting sometimes, WAIT LISTS are just a few of the stresses facing Seniors going through this process. Then there is of course the actual work once we are in (insert Law, Medical, Ph. D., or Masters Program here). Bring on the coffee!

4. Separating from all of your college friends

This may be the hardest part for many of us to swallow, but with new jobs and schools, many of us will be traveling to different parts of the country or even to other countries, taking us far away from our college besties. Not being able to walk over to hang out with my closest friends whenever I want to will almost certainly be the most difficult part about graduating, emotionally speaking. Nothing will ever replace our girls’ nights in watching Game of Thrones or fun nights out that almost always end in grabbing delicious (read: greasy and horrible for you) food while talking about our lives. I’m so weird that I often wonder how I got such awesome people to like me in the first place, how am I going to find more?

5. Paying back your student loans

Remember back when you signed up for loans so that you could actually afford your education? Well, whoever you borrowed from, they officially own your soul. Just kidding, kind of. Once college is over, all of those loans that we got will start having interest added to them. We are expected to start paying them back as soon as possible while, most likely, having a job that doesn’t pay all that much money since we will be just starting our careers. Yikes, and for those of us pursuing more schooling and thus incurring even more debt, may the odds be ever in our favor.

6. Acting like an actual adult

Gone are they days where you can get take-out or delivery every night and still maintain your size. Additionally, that weekend schedule of staying out past midnight and sleeping in until noon will be a thing of the past. We will soon be in a world where the weird and wacky habits that we had during college will destroy our health. Bye-bye metabolism, we’ve had a good run… Also, what is a summer vacation? I’ve heard jobs don’t usually offer those, lame.

7. Despite all of this…

While it will be really hard to move on from the comfortable world that we know, we will finally have the chance to explore, grow, and discover the kinds of women that we were meant to be. We may stumble and fall, but this truly is an incredibly exciting time in our lives. We are the next generation of businesswomen, lawyers, doctors, mothers, wives, scientists, actresses or anything else that we want to be. The world is ours, all we need to do is take it!
