5 Reasons a Good Roommate is Like a Sister

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCLA chapter.

Everyone has heard the horror stories about college roommates. You know, the ones about the roomie who leaves her stuff all over the room or who constantly sexiles you. Well every once in a while the universe pairs people together and they become like sisters. Here is the proof of such a phenomenon:

1.     Zombie Hours

Your roommate sees you when no one else does: in those hours when the outside world is not supposed to see you.  She’s the person who sees you after a long night out and who is inevitably stuck taking care of you. Your roomie is also there when you wake up and you have trouble forming real sentences. In all likelihood this has resulted in the two of you having full conversations that consist solely of groans. And if we’re being honest, no one wakes up looking perfect. In fact, your roommate is the only person who is forced to accept you in your most raw, unattractive state. She’s seen you with your hair tangled, makeup smeared, and food in your teeth. If she can love you through all that, you know it’s real.

2.     Illness

When you get sick during third week, sixth week, ninth week, and all your most important exams it’s pretty awful. The best roommate will see that you have a trashcan full of tissues and run out to get you Nyquil. If you’re afraid of taking large pills she’s the one who will sit with you until she sees you take it for your own good. Then she’ll joke that she only made you take it so your snoring didn’t keep her up at night. If you’re lucky, she’ll put on your favorite music, turn on your basic twinkle lights, and throw an extra blanket on you.

3.     Sharing

Once you know that your roommate is like a sister, it’s pretty much an unspoken rule that what’s yours is hers. Boundaries don’t tend to really exist in an 11’ x 10’ room. And sure, you’ll probably end up borrowing her favorite shirt and spilling chocolate all over it, which will lead to an argument. But you’re too close and that won’t matter after you talk it out. Food is also a shared commodity. She probably has taken your last string cheese after you took her last oatmeal packet, but neither one of you really cares. You’ll just end up going grocery shopping together later.

4.     Spontaneous Adventures

When you wake up on the weekend with nothing to do and have the sudden urge to explore Beverly Hills or Manhattan Beach there is no one better to do it with than the best roomie ever. She’s heard far crazier things come out of your mouth and is always down to spend some quality time together outside of the confines of your dorm. She’s there to tag along on your crazy impulsive adventures, but she’s also there to go with you to that new class at Wooden so you aren’t struggling through it alone. And you love her for that.

5.     Deep Conversations

Awkwardness does not exist (you’re both weird and know it). You can literally sit in perfect silence without feeling pressure to talk for hours on end. While the quiet can be pleasant, it doesn’t compare to the incredibly profound conversations you two have. Your amazing roommate has told you all about her family drama and love life. You’ve each come home to one another in the midst of a mini existential crisis, but you know how to calm each other down. Even if neither one of you cries often, your roommate has definitely seen you cry before. She also knows your most outlandish aspirations, and she is in full support of you no matter what.

If you and your roommate are like sisters, cherish it. Through all of the small fights is an enormous amount of love. Count yourselves lucky!
