The Five Stages of Zayn Malik Loss

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCF chapter.

BREAKING: Zayn Malik has officially left One Direction. Earlier today, he announced, “My life with One Direction has been more than I could ever have imagined. But, after five years, I feel like it is now the right time for me to leave the band. I’d like to apologise to the fans if I’ve let anyone down, but I have to do what feels right in my heart. I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight. I know I have four friends for life in Louis, Liam, Harry and Niall. I know they will continue to be the best band in the world.”

While we can only wish him success in the future, we won’t pretend to be ok with this decision. Here’s how we’re coping.

Denial.

He must just be taking a break! There is no way that this is real! BABY COME BACK!

Anger.

How could he do this to us?! Doesn’t he know how important 1D is!!

Bargaining.

I promise I’ll eat more veggies and go to the gym every day and be nicer to my parents. Anything for him to go back to 1D!

Depression.

We might not have Zayn, but we do have Ben & Jerry, and they’re willing to keep us company as we re-watch the What Makes You Beautifulvideo and dream of simpler times.

Acceptance.

He’s really not part of the band anymore, guys. He’s off to do his own thing, and we will live to see another day. We wish him and the remaining 4 members of 1D the best of luck.
