5 Best Things to do During Midterm Week

STOP! Put the highlighter down, and step away from the physics textbook. Yes, it is the dreadful midterm week and after you ask the question with no answer, AKA: “WHAT ARE WE EVEN BEING TESTED ON?!?” Take a minute to breathe and assess. There’s no running from midterms so as my good friend Timon from The Lion King said long ago, “when the going gets tough, the tough get going.’  So here you go, girl.

1.       Don’t panic!

*Ques French Montana ad-lib* If you’ve been at UCF for a while, or even if you just transferred, there is good news; you have been through this before. It doesn’t help to stress about something you have already gone through and know you can do! Sure, the classes might be a bit harder than last years, but guess what? You’re also smarter than you were last year. So instead of frantically researching “jobs that don’t need a college degree,” take a minute to tell yourself that you are amazing, you will make it through midterms, and that cute guy in your math lab will totally want to study with you.

2. List your way to an A.

Lists keep everything in order, and they remind you of what needs to get done so that it doesn’t feel like the whole world is crashing down around you. If some classes are naturally easier for you than others, make a list that ranks them from hardest to easiest, then begin at the top. If you are one of the unfortunate (but soon-to-be-rich) souls in any bio-med related major, then go ahead and rank the classes in order of what kind of test your professor is trying to destroy you with.  If you’re better at multiple choice tests, rank those at the bottom, but if essays are so not your thing, place those at the top so you know to study a bit harder.

3. To live in the library or not to live in the library?

So the great thing about UCF’s library is that it is HUGE. Like, so big you can bring your laptop, coffee, textbooks, pillow, and still not get in anybody’s way. But, living in the library may not be the healthiest thing for your brain. Studies show that your brain is most relaxed and ready to learn in a comfortable environment, which is probably why people at Google wear sweatpants to work. So if your roommates aren’t blasting the new Nick Jonas single day and night (*guilty*), then maybe try staying home for half the time and then meet up with your buds in the library for a quick study sesh. 

4. French fries are not your friends!

It is so easy to run to McDonalds after a late night cram session, but all of the fat and salt in those tasty little buggers can seriously slow down your metabolism and make your brain super groggy in the morning. Instead, go for some peanut butter on whole wheat toast, or salted almonds to get your fix. A super food for Midterm Week is Salmon because it’s packed with Omega-3s, which help your brain to understand the entire Revolutionary War in like, 4 seconds flat. Fruit juices are also great because they keep you awake and refreshed so your study group doesn’t “accidentally” delete you from the group chat. Yikes.

5. Move that body.

Going to the gym is probably the last thing on your mind no matter what time of the year it is, but it’s actually a little secret that can boost your grade (if used for justice). Stepping away from Batman and going back to midterm week, a 30-minute workout during midterms will release endorphins and endorphins make you feel what? HAPPY. Now this happiness could make you want you want to study, or it could make you want to watch Disney movies.  Like I said, use it for justice (AKA, good grades).
