What I’ll Miss Most at Davis: Shah’s Halal Food Truck

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCD chapter.

It’s been there for me ever since freshman year. It’s provided me comfort, energy, satisfaction, happiness, and more.  Who or what could do such a thing? A food truck. Not just an ordinary food truck though… Shah’s Halal Food Truck. I really am going to miss Shah’s the most after I graduate, because they’re so amazing and here’s why.

1. It’s so simple!

I mean its just meat over rice with salad and sauce. That’s it. You know what you’re getting every time. It’s not as trippy as other menu items from food trucks in which you need to take a risk for whatever they mean by “(male name)’s special chicken.” Like what makes it so special, John/Jake/Luke/Adam?!?

2. It’s filling.

That stuff fills you up! What I usually do is get Shah’s for lunch and save half of it later for dinner. Two meals in one and it tastes wonderful at each sitting too.

3. It’s fast.

While you’re still putting your wallet back in your bag, they’re already calling out your number. Other food trucks make you wait for a while, but not Shah’s. Due to their simple menu, they have all the ingredients ready to go fast. It’s perfect.

4. No small talk.

Of course, the cashiers are always friendly and nice, but what I mean by no small talk is that I don’t have to fill in awkward pauses with dialogue anywhere. This is what happens: 1. Walk up 2. Cashier greets you and asks what you’ll like to order 3. You say what you like to order. 4. Cashier asks “Spicy?” 5. (I say) “Yes” 6. Pay 7. Get your drink and receipt. The whole interaction is probably around a total of 20 seconds. And the food is out usually within the next 20-30 seconds. I love it. I go there for what I want and I get it fast.

5. Can’t get sick of it.

Okay, this one is more of a personal opinion, but I don’t ever get sick of Shah’s. My freshman year I had Shah’s for a whole week during finals. It was so convenient since I lived in Tercero, and I never got sick of it.

Although most people will miss the Arboretum, the squirrels, the cows, and other Davis trademarks after leaving Davis, there is nowhere else that has Shah’s. Thank you Shah’s for everything throughout these 4 years <3
