As the end of the quarter approaches, I am getting increasingly excited. Not just for the end of school, but also for the upcoming summer movies, especially Mamma Mia 2.

When I was in grade school, I always hated when someone said “Mamma Mia!” because I thought they were mocking me. When I visited my aunt in seventh grade, she introduced me to the musical Mamma Mia. I fell in love with it from the moment I saw it. It will make you want to go dancing around on a Greek island, so count me in!

The songs are catchy and easy to remember. The plot has funny, touching, and sad moments, but mostly funny. The characters, from the main characters to dancers, are real and wonderful. It may be a silly story, but it has brought me so much joy.

I have loved musicals my whole life. My first musical was The Phantom of the Opera. I have a tendency to walk around just singing while going to class, doing chores, homework, or cooking. It was not a surprise to anyone that I hummed Mamma Mia wherever I went.

I love all of the songs in the movie, but I love the song “Mamma Mia” the most. I admit I initially did not realize most of the songs had some sort of sexual undertone, but I enjoyed dancing to them. The musical made a lot more sense once I knew the songs were about sex. I do not remember what I thought the songs were about when I was younger, but maybe that was for the best. I bet it was super embarrassing. When I was twelve, I dreamed that I would grow up to find a sexy guy like Skye to sing “Lay All of Your Love on Me” to me.

I really enjoyed “SOS” because I thought it was super romantic to sing about longing to be with your love and the idea of true love lasting forever. I wouldn’t want to be separated from my true love for twenty years, but I would take twenty years if I had to.

My favorite nostalgic song is “Slipping Through My Fingers” because I could identify with wanting the good times with my mom to stay forever. Now that I have home for college, the song is more significant because my childhood is really gone.

Of course I wanted a band of super awesome friends to sing with me. Although Tanya is an interesting character, I loved Rosie even more. I admired that she found her own success and didn’t need a man. Of course, if a tall, Norwegian writer happens to be by, you, like Rosie, should snap him up.

Now that the sequel to Mamma Mia is coming out, all the memories are flooding back. I feel a little sad that my aunt lives so far away, so we cannot see it together. Mostly, I feel happy because I want to see the next chapter of Sophie’s life and Donna’s youth. I hope that if you have not seen the first Mamma Mia that you see it ASAP. Then, see the second movie when it comes out!

I was born in Bakersfield, but I have moved over ten times since I was three years old. I love books and musicals. Yes I am a Hamilton fanatic, Potter fan, Tolkien follower and feel the compulsive need to read at least once a day. My other favorite hobby is cooking. Currently my major is in Environmental Policy Analysis and Planning at UC Davis.
