Books to Explore Over the Summer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCD chapter.

As summer draws near, we should start thinking about what books we want to read over the break. I’m an avid reader when I am not in school, and summer is my favorite time to lie on the beach and dive into a great book! Below are a few suggestions I highly recommend to make your summer more relaxing and enjoyable!

Celebrity Novels

Yes Please by Amy Poehler

Bossypants by Tina Fey

Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) By Mindy Kaling

Not That Kind of Girl: A Young Woman Tells You What She’s “Learned” by Lena Dunham

These books are enjoyable and amusing easy reads that put you in a great mood. I read Mindy Kaling’s book and I absolutely loved it! I’m currently reading Tina Fey’s book, and it’s hilarious. I started reading this book during jury duty and I had to keep myself from laughing aloud in the courtroom! The other two books are next on my list after I finish Bossypants.

Dark Thriller Novels

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson

In the Woods by Tana French

These thrillers will put excitement into your summer. Gone Girl is my all-time favorite book. If you haven’t read it yet, please just read it. I found Sharp Objects, which is also written by the amazing Gillian Flynn, even darker than Gone Girl, but still terrific. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is another classic dark thriller. I started this book a year ago, but never finished it because of school. It’s one of my top books to read this summer. Lastly, In the Woods is a great detective thriller, and it’s a series. I read this last summer and furthered my love for this genre.

Classic Novels

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Emma by Jane Austen

Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë

These books are among the list of classic novels everyone should read at least once. I highly recommend The Great Gatsby and Emma. Both are wonderful stories that bring the past to life. The other two novels are renowned stories that have been loved since their first publications. Of all the classics, these will fill your summer with profound literature and romance plots.

Romantic Novel

Dear John by Nicholas Sparks

Can You Keep a Secret by Sophie Kinsella

Me Before You by Jojo Moyes

Once and for All by Sarah Dessen

Who needs a summer fling when you can read the best romantic novels this summer? Dear John is one of my favorite Nicholas Sparks books, based on a classic military and southern girl love story! However, I recommend the entire collection of Nicholas Sparks’ books, for he knows how to write a love story. Can You Keep a Secret was one of my summer books last year and I adored this novel. This book is fun, quick, and charming, with a perfect amount of romance. Me Before You is one of my favorite romance novels and tugs hard at your heartstrings. You’ll probably cry when reading this book, but it’s worth it. Once and for All is one of Sarah Dessen’s newer novels. I loved reading her books when I was younger and I cannot wait to read this one in the upcoming summer.

I urge you to check out these books even if you don’t consider yourself an avid reader. I will be reading many of them this summer as well. The summer will be great with these fabulous books in my hands!
