Amber Rose Redefines the Word “Slut”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCD chapter.

Amber Rose is giving the word “slut” a whole new meaning and personally, I think it’s great. You may recall her VMA’s body suit that had the words “slut,” “whore,”  and “hoe” written across it.

That fierce outfit was designed to promote her nonprofit organization, The Amber Rose Foundation, which promotes her “core mission of uplifting, empowering, and enhancing the platform of women across the globe.” She has shared this special project with her 7.8 million followers on Instagram. Currently she is hosting “SlutWalks”, which is part of an international movement to support “women who have been subject to slut shaming, a lack of implication of double standards, sexual assault, and even rape.”

Rose challenges the common gender expectation that a man who sleeps around and gets lots of women is a “boss,” but a woman who behaves similarly is disgusting. If you ask me, its about time a woman embraces her “hypersexuality.”

At her most recent SlutWalk, women held signs that read “control yourselves, not women” and “hoes can say no.” While we typically think the words “slut,” “whore,” and “hoe” describe a dirty, insecure, and desperate woman, these Rose-inspired posters illustrate those words in a whole new way. Rose defines a “slut” as a woman with power because she is acting exactly how she feels. This time, the words “slut” and “self respect” go hand in hand.

Rose encourages women who can’t come to her SlutWalk to post a proud “slut selfie” on Instagram to fight gender inequality. Rose continues to share beautiful pictures of herself in sexy lingerie and thong swimsuits that show off her infamous curves. She includes captions like “U guys love slut shaming, huh? Good. I feed off that shit” and the hashtag “how to be a bad bitch.” Recently she posted a picture of herself in a bra that says “Slut? Only when I want to be” and underwear that says “my pussy my choice.”

Rose is teaching an important lesson that everyone in college should know. Just because a woman dresses and acts sexually does not make it okay for someone to take advantage of her later. We are not asking for it. These are our bodies and we should feel in control of them.

At Rose’s SlutWalks, the girl in the booty short-shorts and low cut shirt is strong, important, and totally cool. I am still waiting for the day when every woman can feel this comfortable no matter where they are.
