Five Places to Visit in Downtown Riverside

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Riverside chapter.

If you ever find yourself complaining about how boring Riverside is, you probably haven’t discovered the gem that is Downtown Riverside. The area is crammed with amazing stores and restaurants that can’t be found elsewhere, and the best part is that it’s only a fifteen minute bus ride or five minute drive from campus. Now you have no excuse for dull weekends.

1.      Mission Galleria

3700 Main St

This enormous, three-story antique store is crammed with the most fascinating trinkets and vintage paraphernalia. You can find anything from a classic Star Trek figurine set to the perfect, worn-in denim jacket. Hours can pass wandering through the store without even realizing it. If you find yourself famished after scavenging through boxes of vinyl records, recharge at the Galleria Café tucked in the store’s lower level.

2.      Downtown Farmers Market

Main St and 6th St

Take a relaxing stroll at the Downtown Farmers Market to clear your mind and pick up some local produce and goods. The event runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday and boasts a variety of vendors. Stop by the hummus stand, and try a free sample with their homemade pita chips. You’ll thank me later. Also, make sure to bring cash because the majority of vendors don’t accept card. I unfortunately learned this the hard way.

3.      Back to the Grind

3575 University Ave

I love the cozy yet eclectic atmosphere of this coffee shop, as its brick walls feature fully stocked bookshelves and local artwork. You can even embrace your inner child and play board games while you sip on a hazelnut latte. The shop hosts open mic nights and musical performances regularly, so there’s an assortment of activities to engage in at this amazing establishment.

4.      Simple Simon’s Bakery and Bistro

3639 Main St

If you find yourself craving a warm bowl of chili and fresh cornbread, Simple Simon’s is the perfect place to go. They also have a variety of substantial sandwiches and pastries that are reasonably priced, but I can’t help ordering the chili every time because it’s that addicting.

5.      Downtown Arts Walk

Although it’s more of an event than a precise place, I can’t leave out the Arts Walk. Do yourself a favor and make the trek to this occasion, which is the first Thursday of every month and spans several streets. Wander around the museums you never knew existed in Riverside, stare in amazement at all the artwork, and enjoy the live music. The best part is that the event is free, although there are dozens of vendors selling their artwork and homemade items that are worth checking out.

I'm a fourth year, creative writing major who enjoys thrifting, idolizing David Bowie, and consuming inane amounts of hazelnut coffee.
