12 Things I Learned While Being 21

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Riverside chapter.

It occurred to me that I’m going to be 22 really, really soon. Then I suddenly got sad, because as far as I know it, it is about to be an end of an era. My 21st birthday was the one I looked forward to ever since I started college. As I watch that ship quickly head towards the horizon, I started to do some serious reflecting on all the things I’ve learned in my 21st year of life.

1. Stick to one liquor

If you’re going to drink vodka all night, stick with it! As much fun as it is to try every drink that is handed to you, don’t do it.

2. Gatorade

I think I’ve consumed more Gatorade to cure a hangover, rather than using it the typical way, like at the gym or working out.

3. Friends that hold your hair up, are friends for life

Let’s face it if they can handle you at your worst, they’ll love you at your best.

4. Good heels are an investment

I found that the heels I spent a little more money on were the ones I tended to wear more often, because I didn’t feel the need to take them off after an hour of wearing them.

5. I only like beer if the person I’m out with is drinking beer (but I’d rather not have beer)

I know… its completely normal to have pizza and a beer but is it ok if I have a jack and coke instead?

6. Steer clear of the smoky eye

Yeah it looks good when you walk out the door, but no one likes to look out at racoon eyes after a night out.

7. Lyft and Uber are the saviors to our generation

We’ve all have had that friend who says they are DD, but end up getting the most trashed…

8. I have an unhealthy relationship to Netflix

Those weekends when I don’t go out…. you best believe Netflix is bae.

9. There’s nothing wrong with being single

In fact, being single at this age is totally normal. We’re at the prime in life when we don’t need no man to hold us down.

10. I’ve met some of the coolest people at bars

I’ve found that it’s fun and easy to meet people when you’re going to bars just to see your favorite local artists performing, because you’ll already have something in common with everyone in the room.

11.Take advantage of those no makeup days

On those days you’ll most likely catch me doing number 8 on the list while indulging in a new facemask or stuffing my face with food, or better yet… all three.

12. Take the time you need to find yourself, and be happy.
