Do you have plans for this upcoming weekend? I have a suggestion for you. This weekend head out and go to your nearest theater to watch “Hidden Figures.” I will briefly state why I highly recommend this film. This movie has a twofold. One, it details the historical period of segregation during the 60’s. Two, it also depicts women’s empowerment and how it is constantly being underestimated. In short, it is an untold story of a mathematician that helped Apollo 11 get to the moon.

Theodore Melfi, director of “Hidden Figures,” did a great job of providing descriptions of important historical topics, such as the Jim Crow era and the Space Race. This can be seen throughout the film with the performances of three lively actresses. Taraji P. Henson, who plays as the protagonist Katherine G. Johnson, is a math prodigy yet faces setbacks in her career due to her race. Octavia Spencer, who plays Dorothy Vaughan, acts as a supervisor who oversees 30 women, but does not receive the title or salary she deserves because of her racial background. Lastly, Janelle Monae, who plays Mary Jackson, aspires to be an engineer for NASA, but is not considered for the position until she completes several classes.

I tried my best to not include any spoilers, but believe me this film is truly a crowd-pleaser! To add on, news came out that Jeanette Epps will be the first African-American crew member on the International Space Station. She is set to launch May 2018.

Here is a trailer of the film!
