Escaping the Burdens of Sexy Halloween Costumes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCD chapter.

Costume shops have been selling sexy versions of almost any character you can think of. Sexy Pikachu? Check. Sexy Chucky doll? Check. Despite their impracticality and discomfort, many women have settled for a sexy costume because, unfortunately, the market doesn’t provide much else. This year collegiettes, myself included, are taking measures to avoid freezing our butts off and pulling our skirts down every few seconds. If you’ve also had enough of these burdens, feel free to follow our lead!

Measure 1 (Do It Yourself)

The best way to make sure your costume is warm and comfortable enough is to put it together yourself! That’s why roommates Stephanie Gellner and Sarah Hartenstein are putting together their own Pokémon costumes this year. Stephanie is going to be Misty, her favorite character from the show. She’ll be sporting Misty’s iconic yellow tank top, red suspenders, and sneakers which she bought from Walmart. However, she has decided to wear jeans instead of shorts to account for the cold weather. Sarah is going to be Pikachu because he is “adorable and awesome.” She’s going to wear a yellow sweatshirt, yoga pants, and shoes which she will buy from Ragstock. Of course, she’ll also wear the famous Pikachu tail and ears which she plans to buy from Hot Topic. Not only is Sarah’s Pikachu costume cozier than the sexy one, it’s also more authentic. I certainly don’t remember Pikachu wearing a miniskirt.

 Measure 2 (Hair and Makeup)

Your costume doesn’t have to be revealing to stand out. A little extra grooming will also do the trick. Jessica Alcantara uses Clinique foundation and eye shadow to make her ghoul costume. First, she applies the foundation to her face, neck, and arms. It’s a few shades lighter than her natural skin tone to make her look pale. Then, she blends dark brown, purple, and black eye shadow and smears it around her cheekbones and eyes. To make her hair messy, Jessica brushes it from bottom to top while blow drying it at the same time. She also sprays it with 99-cent black hair dye. To stay warm and modest, Jessica throws on an old robe and white scrubs that she purchased from a goodwill store. She sprays the clothes with red hair dye to make them look bloody. Jessica says, “I chose this costume just to see if  I could pull it off.” Looking at the picture, it seems like she pulled it off quite nicely!

Measure 3 (Minimal Effort)

If you’re like me, you may doubt your ability to make an impressive costume. In that case, anything orange and black is fair game! For instance, I plan to wear a bracelet that has orange and black beads with vampire, witch, and Frankenstein charms. Pumpkin t-shirts and earrings are also highly appropriate. These items may not stand out as much as a sexy Chucky doll costume, but they still reflect the Halloween spirit!
