Why You Never Get What You Want

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Berkeley chapter.

We all have this exact sentiment- wanting something so desperately and having all hope fly out of your grasp. Universal problem or not, this is more of an issue for certain people and here’s why.

1. You never tell anyone what you want.

No one’s a mind-reader. Not even your best friend will ALWAYS know what you want. Instead of being passive aggressive and sulky when you don’t get what you want, just speak up next time. Tell that cutie you want to hangout or tell your best friend where you would rather eat. Don’t remain quiet for fear of conflict. Speaking up will give opportunities for both parties to create amazing compromises.

2. You don’t think you deserve it.

The law of attraction is a real thing. Having the belief that you deserve what you desire is the first step to everything. Once you tell yourself that you don’t deserve something, you create a barrier of unattainability; it is simply a construct in your own mind. Trust me, you deserve this.

3. You aren’t willing to put in work for anything.

Those people who have it all? That’s a mirage. If an individual has something you want, don’t just glare in jealousy. Use that as inspiration. Aren’t we are all human? If someone can achieve what you want to achieve, you have every ounce of ability to as well.

4. There is something better in store for you.

Sometimes we don’t get what we want and while in the moment, you may be ripped to the bone, in retrospect, it may be the best deviation for you. Have faith because the world is not out to get you. Maybe what you want isn’t what you need in order to make the most of this life.

Every moment of every day is worthwhile and beautiful, despite it all.

As a senior undergraduate, I seek out all opportunities that expand my horizons, with the aim of developing professionally and deepening my vision of how I can positively impact the world around me. While most of my career aims revolve around healthcare and medicine, I enjoy producing content that is informative, engaging, and motivating.  In the past few years, I have immersed myself in the health field through working at a private surgical clinic, refining my skills as a research assistant in both wet-lab and clinical settings, shadowing surgeons in a hospital abroad, serving different communities with health-oriented nonprofits, and currently, exploring the pharmaceutical industry through an internship in clinical operations.  Career goals aside, I place my whole mind and soul in everything that I pursue whether that be interacting with patients in hospice, consistently improving in fitness PR’s, tutoring children in piano, or engaging my creativity through the arts. Given all the individuals that I have yet to learn from and all the opportunities that I have yet to encounter in this journey, I recognize that I have much room and capacity for growth. Her Campus is a platform that challenges me to consistently engage with my community and to simultaneously cultivate self-expression.
