Take Your Safety Into Your Hands

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Berkeley chapter.

As a campus organization that supports confident, independent collegiettes, your safety is extremely important to us. That is why we want to introduce you to the app BlueLight, an empowering safety service that provides easy-to-use tools for both everyday and emergency situations—as in, the best tool for collegiettes looking to live their lives with confidence—and precaution. BlueLight is the personal safety companion that will make you feel safe when returning from those late night study sessions in the library, those after-hours snack runs or after a night out with your girls.

Not only does BlueLight help you personally, it also alerts your loved ones of your well being when you are out late at night or running errands alone. One of the most useful features on BlueLight is the Request Help button, which connects you to the closest emergency services (whether 911 when off campus or Campus Security on campus). When calling for emergency services, the user’s closest address appears over the dialer to inform the dispatcher of his or her location. You also have the option while dialing emergency services to simultaneously notify emergency contacts. You can also share your location with your contacts with the On My Way feature, so somebody knows where you are when you’re en route, or even when you’re heading home.

BlueLight—developed by Preet Anand as an effort to decrease the high rate of sexual assault on campus—is available on both Android and iOS. You can sign up through BlueLight’s website or download the app in the Apple Store or from Google Play. We want you to take your safety into your own hands—download BlueLight now!
