My friends and I are currently doing a social media fast. We deactivated and deleted our Facebooks, Instagrams, Twitters, and Tumblrs. We’re also staying away from TV Shows and YouTube.
We realized that over time, we were subconsciously being affected by the things we saw on social media in regards to self-esteem. Scrolling through Facebook, a lot of us felt envy when looking at what other people were doing. We felt inadequate or insecure in terms of our achievements and our body image. So we decided that we had enough of it all.
I typically deactivated my Facebook before finals in order to focus better, but even now, I feel much happier and I have so much more time to spend with people in real life and real time.
Once we had all deactivated our Facebooks (which took up the majority of our time), we just got the ball rolling and decided to delete all the other things that made us feel even just a bit insecure—including Instagram, with all the “like”-counting.
Overall, I’m very happy with doing this “social media fast”. It’s great to do in order to just start living again.
No more internet drama. No more facepalming at dumb comments. Just pure life and real people.
I really recommend trying this “social media fast” out, even if just for a month. I’m not sure how long I’ll be keeping this up—maybe a year, maybe two, or maybe I’ll never go back. Maybe. We’ll see how things advance.
But for now, life is very sweet, indeed.
