Insta-Famous Berks

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Berkeley chapter.

Contrary to the very commonly-held belief that Berkeley is full of unappealing nerds, we surely have some extremely fine people that can be spotted here and there walking across Sproul. Even more than that, there are a few faces that have become extremely popular on social media, with Instagram in particular.

To name a few accounts that I have stumbled across recently:

  1. Jaylene – @jaylene_joy

  1. Jessica Bartlett- @jessicambartlett

Both are undeniably gorgeous girls with more than 30k followers with beauty, brains, and great Instagram feeds.

Now, whether or not becoming Instagram famous is achievable or not is one matter but the question here is whether or not the benefits you can reap are worth it, monetarily. As an Instagrammer, the main focus is to be an influencer–essentially someone who is respected by a large social community of followers to be a trendsetter whose opinions matter more than the average individual’s.

According to popular Youtubers, the most common source of income is to work with brands that target social media influencers to sponsor a paid post. Nowadays, the most difficult battle that is faced is to be genuine and stray from being labelled as a sellout for being paid to sponsor. Most of these deals involve a $200-400 request by the influencer per post which may seem like easy money but appealing to a brand itself does not come easily unless you’re already known in other ways such as the modeling industry or Youtube.

The next popular method of promotional marketing comes in the form of affiliates. If you know anything about popular brands that have come out in the recent years such as Gymshark, you are well aware that they find awesome people to partner-up as a consistent advocate for their products. Affiliates generally get a commission-based payment in which the company will provide a promo-link for the specific individual so whenever a purchase is made through the affiliate, a portion of the sale will be given as commission toward the affiliate. Commission tends to be around 10% of the sale.

With the consideration that these are the two easiest ways to earn money through Instagram, do you think you have what it takes? And if so, is it worth it in your eyes or do you believe that there are easier ways to make money?

UC Berkeley '19

As a senior undergraduate, I seek out all opportunities that expand my horizons, with the aim of developing professionally and deepening my vision of how I can positively impact the world around me. While most of my career aims revolve around healthcare and medicine, I enjoy producing content that is informative, engaging, and motivating.  In the past few years, I have immersed myself in the health field through working at a private surgical clinic, refining my skills as a research assistant in both wet-lab and clinical settings, shadowing surgeons in a hospital abroad, serving different communities with health-oriented nonprofits, and currently, exploring the pharmaceutical industry through an internship in clinical operations.  Career goals aside, I place my whole mind and soul in everything that I pursue whether that be interacting with patients in hospice, consistently improving in fitness PR’s, tutoring children in piano, or engaging my creativity through the arts. Given all the individuals that I have yet to learn from and all the opportunities that I have yet to encounter in this journey, I recognize that I have much room and capacity for growth. Her Campus is a platform that challenges me to consistently engage with my community and to simultaneously cultivate self-expression.
