How We Spiced Up President’s Day Weekend

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Berkeley chapter.

Sometimes we forget that Holidays are spent in entirely different ways, differing with every culture and every individual. Here’s a glimpse into how our team members spent the three-day weekend!

“This Presidents’ Day weekend, I spent some quality time with my family – aka, my lovely mother. Together, we went to the terribly crowded yet pleasantly soothing local mall in the city, caught up on the state of our ongoing lives, and engaged in some old-fashioned window-shopping together (I highly recommend going inside the Coach boutique after conquering the long queue outside). Afterward, we enjoyed one delectable cup of frozen yogurt together, with my favorite toppings (Oreo cookies and chocolate wafers) on top of hers (the plain “sans topping” template, drowned by my cocoa overload). Next, after finally agreeing to satisfy my salty tooth with yet another serving of carbs through salty pretzels, we came back home, both of us happy and content with our (lack of) shopping and leisurely mall traipsing, ready to return to the business of the coming week ahead.”

“Three days may not seem as such a long break, but the long weekend for President’s Day has the potential to be a much-needed break. With mid-terms coming up, I used Saturday to catch up on any homework, studying, laundry, and other productive tasks that I’ve been putting off for a while. On Sunday, a few friends and I headed off into San Francisco, exploring the Bay by adventuring Fisherman’s Wharf and tasting Ghirardelli’s delicious ice cream! Finally, on Monday, I took a day off to pamper myself and relax after a long week!”

“Since it’s Chinese New Year, I went to San Jose to meet up with my uncle’s family and spent the holiday with them. I stuffed myself with traditional Chinese food and received a few red envelopes which certainly brightened my day! Not being at home with my family for Chinese New Year is an incredibly strange and lonely feeling, but it’s also another step into “adulting” I suppose haha!”

“Over the weekend, I spent a bit of time destressing and catching up with an old friend from high school who I hadn’t seen in a year. I was in the Berkeley area the entire weekend so I went to Eureka for the first time; I definitely would recommend going if you haven’t visited before!”

“This President’s Day weekend I went home and spent some time with my family. We went out to eat and tried a new place called Rock and Brews that just opened up in my hometown, Vacaville. Rock and Brews is actually co-owned by Gene Simmons from KISS. There was a lot of anticipation waiting for the restaurant to open up, so it was great to finally get to experience it with the fam!” -Arianna

As a senior undergraduate, I seek out all opportunities that expand my horizons, with the aim of developing professionally and deepening my vision of how I can positively impact the world around me. While most of my career aims revolve around healthcare and medicine, I enjoy producing content that is informative, engaging, and motivating.  In the past few years, I have immersed myself in the health field through working at a private surgical clinic, refining my skills as a research assistant in both wet-lab and clinical settings, shadowing surgeons in a hospital abroad, serving different communities with health-oriented nonprofits, and currently, exploring the pharmaceutical industry through an internship in clinical operations.  Career goals aside, I place my whole mind and soul in everything that I pursue whether that be interacting with patients in hospice, consistently improving in fitness PR’s, tutoring children in piano, or engaging my creativity through the arts. Given all the individuals that I have yet to learn from and all the opportunities that I have yet to encounter in this journey, I recognize that I have much room and capacity for growth. Her Campus is a platform that challenges me to consistently engage with my community and to simultaneously cultivate self-expression.
