Ten Signs You Are From a Small Town

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UBC chapter.

Like many other students, I am taking advantage of having no classes to head home. For me, home is Salmon Arm, BC, a small town with a population of less than 20,000 people. Whenever I come across someone else from a small town, we tend to bond over the same inevitable experiences of growing up in a place that most people don’t know exists. Here are the top ten signs that you come from a small town:

1. Going to the grocery store with your mom involves stopping and chatting with several people she knows, and you will definitely see your former teachers

2. Whenever you tell someone where you’re from, they say “Where?”

3. You have been late for school/work because you were stuck behind a tractor on the highway

4. Most of your high school parties took place in the middle of the woods up a mountain

5. Going to the bar when you’re back home is like a high school reunion

6. You’ve lied to your parents about staying at friends when you were actually drinking in an elementary school field…

7. …but by the next day your mom had already heard from several people what field it was, who you were with, and what brand of alcohol you were drinking

8. You and your friends have dated the same people because the options are so limited

9. You didn’t understand how public transit worked when you first moved away from home

10. But whenever tragedy strikes, you can count on the whole town for support
