Squirrels of UBC: an Interview with our Fluffy Neighbours

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UBC chapter.

You’ve seen them on your way to class, skittering between the trees along Main Mall and scurrying through the bushes. Occasionally, you may even have snapped a quick picture of them doing something adorable to share on social media. They are the Squirrels of UBC, and this week we here at Her Campus UBC have managed to secure an interview! Read on to learn more about our squirrelly pals.

HCUBC: What is your purpose in making the leap from gathering nuts around campus to gathering followers on social media?

Squirrels of UBC: We noticed that there was no real UBC Squirrel presence online, so we decided to create the page. Incidentally, our comments on UBC Confessions were a hit and so we continue to give out advice and positivity on our platform.

HCUBC: As squirrels, what are some struggles you face in everyday campus life that students might not realize?

SOU: Well, back in the day, there was Carter the UBC Coyote. At the time, we were really stressed about the fact that he was murdering our families. However, we’ve dealt with him/her. Nowadays, our struggles come when we can’t find the dankest memes right away.

HCUBC: You have the unique ability to observe the human population from an outsider’s point of view. Have these observations influenced your meme game?

SOU: Given our years of experience at observing people around campus, we take pride in our outsider perspective. They have definitely allowed us to post more relatable content and comments for UBC students to enjoy. We really love our fans and take care of them in our own ways such as contests and giveaways.

HCUBC: What kind giveaways have you done in the past?

SOU: We’ve given away a lot of new Xbox One games, Xbox Live Codes, and lots and lots of LOVE!  We love getting messages from our fans and always show our love and appreciation for them. We couldn’t have become the #1 University Squirrels page in Canada without them.

HCUBC: Congratulations on that! How do you spend your time when not sharing dank memes? What are your favourite squirrelly activities?

SOU: Well, we love to run around tree barks and chase each other. In our more candid moments, you’ll find us chomping down on some pizza slice we found. For the most part we just chill up in our trees.

HCUBC: Ah, that sounds like the life! How are your relations with the UBC students on campus? Is there any reason you guys keep sneaking into our dorms?

SOU: Even though we like to maintain our own space, we sometimes let students get within a metre or so, that way they can get a nice photo of us. And shhh! We will never say how or why we sneak into your dorms. Let’s just say we like to reach new heights.

HCUBC: To end off, is there any final thing you’d like to say to the readers?

SOU: We encourage readers to keep an eye out for future contests and to share our posts! Together we can become the #1 squirrels page in the country. We have some wonderful surprises ahead as well!

There you have it folks. Follow the Squirrels of UBC on social media, and follow for all the dankest memes and sweet giveaways!

Avery is a second-year student at the University of British Columbia, where she is exploring her innumerable and possibly not very practical interests. She hails from the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island and has plans to do much more travelling before she gets too tired. If given a choice she would much rather have gone to Hogwarts, but readily admits that UBC is a close second. Her most notable talent is an uncanny ability to quote Hamilton during almost any conversation.
