In August a new event graced our very own UBC watering hole, the Pit Pub, deemed Drag 101: A monthly drag show performed on the last Thursday of every month. Here are some reasons you should absolutely check it out:

You are an overworked and overstressed UBC student; you deserve an excuse to get out at least once a month for a fun night of dancing, drinks, and A+ performances featuring not only local Vancouver Drag talent such as Peach Cobblah, Isolde N. Barron, and Carlotta Gurl — who undoubtedly deliver slam dunk performances all year round, but I won’t be giving anything away! — but fellow students like yourself! How is this you ask? Three words: Lip sync battles!

Us plebs in the audience have the unparalleled chance to get up on stage and battle it out for the glory of making our very own drag debut at the end of the night. Featured songs are well-recognizable fare such as “I Will Survive” — basically guaranteeing that the lip-syncer will be the only ones in the club not singing at the top of their lungs. Winners get to head backstage after act one to get “dragged” up and pick a drag name (my personal favourite from the night was Hunter Gatherer) before return for an epic finale.

Of course, once the professionals and the amateurs alike have set the mood, there’s plenty of tried-and-true dancing to be done.

So, HC UBC, what are you waiting for? Get on out there and experience this epic show! I’ll be expecting each and every one of you at the Pit on October 26th.

See you there!

Avery is a second-year student at the University of British Columbia, where she is exploring her innumerable and possibly not very practical interests. She hails from the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island and has plans to do much more travelling before she gets too tired. If given a choice she would much rather have gone to Hogwarts, but readily admits that UBC is a close second. Her most notable talent is an uncanny ability to quote Hamilton during almost any conversation.
Samantha is a third year UBC student majoring in Political Science. Samantha loves any kind of tea, drawing, reading, and traveling to new places. Her favourite thing to do is play with animals and write stories. One day, she hopes to have traveled to every continent.
