A Guide to Life at UBC

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UBC chapter.

Welcome to the city within a city! The University of British Columbia (UBC) is home to a diverse set of students, with one of the highest proportions of international students in all of North America. I don’t think there is a campus that can beat our views of the ocean and mountains –  the perks of going to school on a peninsula. Overall, UBC is a great place to be, and we at HCUBC want to commemorate it. Check out our list about our favourite things about UBC, and read about our sister chapter, HC Ryerson’s list, here.

  • School: UBC
  • Location: Vancouver
  • Mascot: Thunder the Thunderbird
  • Population: 61,113

Why UBC?

While we all had different reasons for choosing UBC, one of the reasons we all shared was the beauty of UBC’s campus and its amazing view! There is nothing bad about getting to look out on the ocean and mountains every now and then. Another reason for choosing UBC is that it feels like a city of its own, which means there are a lot of opportunities and people to meet!

The best place to eat on campus or in Vancouver?

As it is too hard to just pick one, here are some of our favourites:

The Naam

                                                                                                                                         Source

Burgoo

Meet on Main

How can students get involved with HCUBC?

We are always looking for more writers, editors, photographers, and readers! If you are interested in getting involved, email us at ubc@hercampus.com or check us out on Facebook!

What’s the best place to study on campus?

For Katie, Irving K. Barber is the best place to study on campus as it has big windows and is not dead silent! IKB is also a great place to go as it has silent study rooms as well, although this library can get quite busy. If you are looking for a place that is a little less hectic, try some of the rooms in the residence areas around campus!

How would you describe UBC/Vancouver?

As described by many of our writers, UBC can feel like a very big place – so big that it is almost too overwhelming. However, there are so many ways to find close-knit communities at UBC, like HCUBC *wink wink*, so it is important to get involved. As for Vancouver, the feel is very west-coast. There is lots of yoga, Birkenstocks, vegan food, and outdoor activities to choose from!

Which organizations have strong female influence on campus?

Other than HCUBC, there are a lot of other organizations on campus that showcase strong female leadership! Some of the clubs include the Women’s Centre, UBC Feminist Club, Women in Engineering, the Sexual Assault Support Centre, and the Pride Collective at UBC.

What are some famous attractions in Vancouver?

Where do we start? As a beginner in Vancouver, or someone who just hasn’t gotten around to it yet, you should definitely take a walk around Stanley Park, brave the Capilano Suspension Bridge, grab some food on Granville Island, go out for a night in Gastown, check out the cute sea creatures at the Vancouver Aquarium, and take a ferry to one of the islands nearby. There is a ton to choose from!

Best place to pet dogs on campus?

Word on the street is that there are plenty of cute dogs to pet on Main Mall. UBC is also host to multiple dog-petting therapy events throughout each term, so keep an eye out for those!

Hope this list was helpful, and make sure to check out Her Campus Ryerson’s page too!
