This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UBC chapter.

The new Tomb Raider film comes out March 16th and we can barely wait! The film is a reboot of the original Tomb Raider series starring Angelina Jolie as heroine Lara Croft. The new film will follow Alicia Vikander playing Lara Croft, as she goes out on her first expedition hoping to unveil the mystery of her father’s death. The action packed film features Alicia Vikander performing breathtaking stunts and showing off the results of months of intense training. The actress revealed that she gained 12 pounds of muscle for the film and spent months doing physical training such as cycling, weights, MMA, and boxing.

Tomb Raider is another addition to the list of current mainstream films starring powerful women. The film industry is taking a much needed turn towards female empowerment, and we can see this change through the slow but steady rise of women in front of and behind the camera. Lara Croft represents adventure, determination, intelligence, bravery, beauty, and strength. As mentioned before, Alicia Vikander has trained hard for this role, and we cannot wait to see the results.

You do not want to miss this jaw-dropping, action packed film! The movie will be playing at various Vancouver theatres on its release day, but if you don’t want to wait and also want to snag some free tickets, enter our Facebook contest to win tickets for an advanced screening here
