Voting 101: What You Need to Know About Election Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UAB chapter.

If you’re planning on voting this year (I hope you are!) there are a few things you may want to keep in mind. Here’s a quick guide to make your experience a little less stressful!

1. When do I vote?

Polls will open at 7:00 a.m. and close at 7:00 p.m. CST on Election Day (Tuesday, November 8th). Be sure to plan accordingly to ensure that you have enough time to make it to the polls!

2. Where can I vote?

There will be lots of voting polls throughout the city, but the easiest way to find out where you can vote is by visiting the Alabama Votes webpage (poll locator). Just provide your voter information and the rest is done for you! We recommend looking up your location before Election Day to avoid any confusion.

3. What if I’m an out-of-state student?

Don’t worry! If you’re an out-of-state student like myself you can still vote. After you have filled out an absentee ballot application, you may hand-deliver your absentee ballot to the absentee election manager or mail the ballot in. If you choose to mail in your ballot, it must be postmarked no later than Monday, November 7th. For more detailed information on voting absentee you can check out this link (Voting Absentee).

4. What should I bring?

In order to vote you will have to provide an accepted photo ID. This includes, but is not limited to your driver’s license, a State or Federal issued ID, US military ID, and Student IDs. That’s right, you can use your university ID as long as it includes a photo of yourself. Here’s a complete list of Voter ID Requirements

For first time voters the process can be a bit intimidating, but we hope our tips make your experience a bit easier!
