Tie Day Friday With Ali Massoud

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UAB chapter.
Friday.
Last day of classes.
Relaxation day. Party night.

Friday is the day for me, and I’m sure you look forward to the single weekday you can ensure a little R&R (or centralize the partying). Either way, it’s a celebratory day and the joyous festivity going on in your head as you manage to make it through that last class should indisputably coordinate with your FriDAY outfit, right? So collegiates, why is UAB filled with T-shirts, faded jeans, and old sneaks on the most reputable day of the week?!

So, of course, after I noticed a kid in my Friday lecture dressed to the max—tie and all—I had to get the fashionista’s opinion on style in general.

Ali Massoud participates in Tie Day Friday and, along with Ali Simpson, created another slant-rhymed fashion day: Scarf Day Monday. The fashion duet initially planned on Scarf Day Sunday, but no one on campus sees your carefully designed outfits then.

Meet Ali Massoud; a primary and inspiring example of why consistent fashion is prominent, even on a “laid-back day.” (And yes, I quote that because I know it’s a relative term for a collegiate) A fashion-forward gentleman who will never wear the same outfit twice…especially not on a Friday.

Name: Ali Massoud
Year: Freshman
Major: English/French
Hometown: Cairo, Egypt
Activities/Memberships: University Honors Program, Attorney on Mock Trial, Committee Chair for Circle K, Intern for USGA

HC: Do you think it’s essential to dress up on Fridays and if so, do you transition from a day-to-night look?
AM: Yes! Friday is still a school day despite the Thursday parties. Make sure you have your look together. Usually, I try to wear darker colors at night and sometimes I’ll interchange pieces to make a night-time friendly look.

HC: What’s your fashion spirit animal?
AM: I know it’s a bit of a cliché, but I’d have to say either a chameleon or a peacock. I’m a chameleon because I wear a lot of different styles. I might look preppy one day and hipster the next. But I’m also a peacock because no matter what I wear, I try to stand out with my fashion sense.

HC: What’s your fashion faux-pas?
AM: I hate to see people wear plaid shorts and striped shirts.

HC: You’re on a $50 budget for a complete, head-to-toe outfit. Where do you go to buy your look at?
AM: H&M. But if you’re not in ATL, go to Salvation Army because they have sales every Wednesday.

HC: What is your go-to fashion accessory?
AM: I think I’m going to have to go with belts on this one. They’re the center of the whole composition, so it really gives you a chance to pull everything together.

HC: What’s your current fashion obsession?
AM: Boots. I’m so into boots right now. You’ve got your combat boots—Western influenced accessories. And I really like scarves a lot…they’re perfect for transitioning into fall. Some days aren’t cold enough to throw on a jacket, but a scarf looks a little warmer.
