Meet Staff Writer: Tamia Heard

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UAB chapter.

Name: Tamia Heard

Classification: Sophomore

Hometown: Foley, AL

Major: Communication Studies/Journalism

Age: 20

Bekah: What made you choose your major?

Tamia: Happiness is important to me, so I wanted to be sure I majored in something I truly enjoy! In grade school I was always writing, whether it was for newspaper, yearbook, or leisure. I decided that majoring in journalism would best fit my interests!

Bekah: What are you passionate about?

Tamia: Helping others. If there is a way for me to help, I always try to!

Bekah: What’s your dream job?

Tamia: I would love to be a journalist for a major network. I think women, especially women of color, are underrepresented in the realm of media, so I would like to make an effort to change that. I haven’t really narrowed down what topics I want to cover specifically. I think I would enjoy anything from sports and entertainment to hard news!

Bekah: What are you most thankful for?

Tamia: I am thankful for a supportive family. Without them I don’t think I would’ve have achieved as much as I have thus far.

Bekah: What’s your favorite quote?

Tamia: “Be where your feet are.” It’s simple, sometimes you can’t worry about how last week ended or how the next week will begin. Just be in the moment.

Bekah: What’s your advice for freshmen?

Tamia:

1. Be open to new experiences. You won’t get new results if you don’t do something new.

2. Network. College is great for making connections and they can really help you in the future.

3. Have fun, but focus! Always remember why you are here.
