Lunch Break: Your Pie at Uptown

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UAB chapter.

There is an abundance of amazing food in Birmingham, and sometimes it’s hard to pick the perfect lunch spot in the middle of the week. With time restraints and an admittedly not so flossy bank account, it’s easy to get into a lunch rut.

Two weeks ago, I decided to overcome my boring lunch habit, so a friend and I went to what I can only describe as a minor slice of heaven, Your Pie.

I will start off by saying that I knew this would be a great experience even before I stepped into the restaurant. Why? Because the entire parking lot smelled like the freshest of baked dough. But not even that prepared me for what waited inside.

Basically, Your Pie is a super cool version of Subway, for pizza. So, you go through the line and watch as cooks roll out your personal pizza dough (choose between traditional white, wheat, and gluten free dough), slather homemade sauce, and top your masterpiece with unlimited toppings.

I chose my personal favorite sauce and toppings: pesto topped with mozzarella cheese, chicken, tomatoes, and spinach. Don’t bother asking for extra cheese because their cheese sprinkling game would make Salt Bae proud. Trust me.

After you’re satisfied with your toppings, your pizza goes into a fiery pit of deliciousness, commonly known as a brick oven. This is important because brick ovens make sure that the dough is cooked evenly to a perfect crisp. This means that every bite has a soft, satisfying crunch and a perfect ratio of toppings to dough.

So, I know what you’re thinking. “Cool, pizza. This place cannot possibly get any better.” Wrong! Right as I was about to pay, the cashier offered me a scoop of fresh gelato. That’s right, gelato. They had about eight different flavors, I went with cookies and cream, but was able to try the blood orange flavor: both were amazing.

We ordered to-go and sat at the bar as we waited, where we noticed that they offer local brews on tap, as well as a pretty nice wine selection.

Even though we ordered to-go, I had to take a bit of my pizza while it was hot and fresh. It was a beautiful experience: the cheese was perfectly melted, the crust was crisp on the outside and fluffy in the middle, and the pesto was utterly amazing. I have refused to order delivery pizza since then.

The pizzas were ready in about 8 minutes and the entire process took less than 20 minutes. Now, I will say that we went around 12 PM on a Thursday and there were not many people at all, so that may be a good time to go if you just want to try it out.

Total Spent: $11.42

Deliciousness: 6/5
