A Beginners Guide to Natural Hair

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UAB chapter.

The Big Chop. Creamy Crack. The Fro. For years now, girls have been obsessed with ‘going natural’. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the term “Natural”, it means returning to your natural grade of hair. You aren’t using any chemicals to make your hair curly or straight; just the natural grade of hair you were born with. It’s a healthier state for your hair to grow in and in most case’s your hair grows longer and thicker then when chemicals were applied! Whether you’re thinking of going natural, or are already in the process, here are some tips for overcoming the fear of letting go of that creamy crack!

1. OPTIONS. If you aren’t comfortable with wearing an all out fro (especially if you did the big chop) there are many options such as braids or sew-in’s that will protect your hair and essentially help with the growing process. People believe that going natural means you have to wear a fro all the time, and that’s not the case! Do what you’re comfortable with.

2. BE CONFIDENT. Having short hair is only temporary. There are many ways to flaunt your new look with accessories such as headbands, clips, and even twists in the front. Beauty radiates from within, so if you’re confident in  your new doo, flaunt it!

3. YOUTUBE. Throughout my natural hair journey watching YouTube tutorials on how to do different styles or how to use different products helped A LOT! Start researching, and you may find your go to girl or a few different girls who help on how to do certain things.

4. EMBRACE YOUR TEXTURE. As you begin to go natural, it’s easy to get caught up in other girls hair texture. You start to think that your hair is supposed to look and do the same things as theirs. Embrace the hair texture that you have! Although it may be frustrating once you begin to love your natural self, it will make your natural hair journey a lot more fun!
