Album of the Year Analyzed

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UAB chapter.

Grammy nominations are out! I am shook! And as the pro music critic I am… I thought who could be more perfect than a 20 year old college student to analyze this years Album of the Year nominees…..Here are my findings….. DUN DUN (Law and Order dramatic transition music)

Melodrama– Lorde

                Breakout Song-“Green Light”

                Personal Favorite- “Green Light”

I started off with Lorde because I hadn’t heard much about her or that she even had an album come out. And let me tell you! This is the most underrated album of the year!  I have never heard her sound so…..happy, but miserable at the same time. It speaks to every overdramatic teenager going through a heartbreak .The beats! I repeat! THE BEATS, alone make you fall in love with the whole piece of art itself and the way her magical vocals sooth your soul, makes everything just go right in the world.

Awaken, My Love! – Childish Gambino

                Breakout Song- “Redbone”

                Personal Favorite- “Terrified”

I am going to be really honest. I love Gambino but, the first part of the album was not my favorite personally. But, I see why people love it because, the production is amazing. I just couldn’t get with the movement. I see why he is nominated, the thought and creativity he puts into his projects is spectacular and he tells amazing stories through his music and especially through this project.

24K Magic– Bruno Mars

Breakout Song- “That’s What I Like”

Personal Favorite- “Straight Up & Down”

As soon as the soulful vocals of Bruno rang through my speakers I knew it was love.  His rendition of the classic 90s R&B feel just made it even better. It just took me to a better time where falling in love and making love wasn’t a thing of the past. I loved every second of it.

DAMN – Kendrick Lamar

                Breakout Song- “HUMBLE.”

                Personal Favorite- “LOVE. (FEAT. ZACARI.)”

I went about listening to this album a little different because I saw an interview were Kendrick said that it was meant to be heard in headphones, so that’s exactly what I did. Let me tell you this album goes so hard and it’s a whole different experience when listening to it though different medians. Also, the fact that it can be listened backwards and tells the same story in the opposite way. The artistry. I have no words. Just Amazing. Amazing.

4:44 – Jay Z

Breakouts Song- “The Story of O.J.”

Personal Favorite- “Bam (feat. Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley)”

Lastly, what can I say? The lyrics are so raw. So true. Jay Z you ain’t ever lied!! I felt as though he was talking to me and giving me the most real advice, usually the advice your drunken uncle usually lays on you at the family BBQ. Again I have no words. His lyricism says it all.
