RSO Spotlight: Naughty Pines Derby Dames

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Wyoming chapter.

Name: Nyoka Erikson

Year in school: 4th Year

Major: Civil Engineering

Organization: Naughty Pines Derby Dames

Position: President of RSO

Her Campus: Tell us more about the Derby Dames!

Nyoka Erikson: We are the fan club for an all female, skater-owned and operated flat track roller derby league. The team’s intent is to promote sportswoman-ship, encourage community involvement and foster working relationships with other community non-profit organizations. RSO members are fans as well as student skaters.

HC: Why did you join?

NE: I joined the team because I like contact sports and roller skating.

HC: What are the benefits of joining?

NE: It’s good exercise, a great team, and there are community involvement opportunities.

HC: What is your favorite memory?

NE: When I got to scrimmage for the first time.

HC: Why would you encourage someone to join?

NE: Anybody who likes to watch NPDD play is welcome to join the RSO! I would encourage someone to join the team because it’s a fun, contact sport. You don’t have to consider yourself athletic or even be able to roller skate to come try it out!

HC: How can someone get involved?

NE: Practices are on Tuesdays and Thursdays 6:30-8:30pm. We scrimmage on Sundays 6:30-8:30pm. We have gear for anybody who wants to come try it out; just show up to the Thursday or Tuesday practice. There’s a 2-month trial period during which you can borrow gear and don’t have to pay dues, so you can see what it’s like. People can also be involved by volunteering to be non-skating officials (NSOs) or security for our bouts. Or just come watch us bout!
