Name: Danielle Raffa

Hometown: Castle Rock, CO

Major: Family and Consumer Science with a concentration in Design, Merchandising, and Textiles. Minor in Marketing

Year in school: Senior

Job: Student Coordinator for Volunteer Programs in the Service, Leadership, and Community Engagement (SLCE) Office

HC: What has been the most foundational aspect of your education at UW? DR: The most foundational part of my education at UW has been coordinating events through my job in the SLCE Office. Specifically, planning The Big Event, which entails a great deal of preparation, coordination, and collaboration.  It has taught me so many valuable stills such as training students to fulfill leadership roles, working with members of the community to prepare for service projects, collaborating with the city and community organizations to get the most out of the day, and working with businesses to gain sponsorships.  HC: How did you get involved on campus? DR: I got involved on campus by applying to be a SLCE Coordinator and since working here I have been involved in many different areas of campus. Before getting involved with SLCE, I got involved by becoming an Ag Ambassador through the College of Ag, participating in Relay for Life, and joining the Club Volleyball Team.

HC: What are some of the events you have helped with? Which has been your favorite, and why? DR: I have helped with The Big Event, MLK Day of Service, Hunger and Homelessness Week, and Earth Week. My favorite is The Big Event because I feel that it is an event that goes so much good in the community and on campus. It’s truly amazing to see students come together to provide a helping hand to members of the community. I love the way that this day brings the whole town together and adds to the unique value of giving within the community of Laramie.  HC: What motivates you to do the work you do?  DR: I am motivated by the people that we help on a daily basis. I love when people reach out to for us and ask for help because they know that we will do all we can to provide that help. I love the students who truly have service in their heart and want to do anything to give back. I love the smile on the faces of the people we help and the smiles of those who want to give their time for the benefit of someone else. These, including many others, are the things that motivate me. Overall, this is a very fulfilling job.  HC: What do you want to do once you graduate? DR: When I graduate I want to do something in the realm of event planning or design. I might become a wedding designer, an interior designer, or an event coordinator. Overall, I want to make an impact in people’s lives, whether that means creating lifelong memories for them or creating a space that make their life easier.
