Nine Ways to Celebrate Halloween for the UVic Student

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Vic chapter.

It’s that time of year again: the season of layering and pumpkins. For so many of us, Halloween is full of childhood memories of dressing up and trick-or-treating, but now that we’re all verging on adulthood and have fled the nest to Victoria–how do we celebrate this festive time of year away from home? Here are nine ways to celebrate Halloween for the UVic Student:

1. Invite your friends over to watch Hocus Pocus in your pjs, or if you are in for a scarier cinematic experience, try Halloween. Bake your favourite treats, carve pumpkins, or decorate tiny pumpkins with paint or glue sticks and crafts!

2. Watch ‘Dracula’ performed by Ballet Victoria. It isn’t everyday that a ballet company has a Halloween-themed production!

3. This one is a bit of a treck to get to, so make sure you have a car or get a ride with a friend because… it’s all the way in Saanich, but I hear it’s worth it. Visit the Vancouver Island Corn Maze! Apparently this maze is huge, which makes it all the more fun. Be prepared to most likely get lost, so bring people you don’t mind getting lost with ;)

4. Visit the Pumpkin Art on Oak Bay Avenue. There, hundreds of carved pumpkins are left for people to visit every Friday of October from 5-9 p.m. and Saturday, from 5-10 p.m. behind the Oak Bay municipal hall.

5. Do a ghost tour! This is one way to get to know Victoria… although you might be a touch freaked out after…

6. Visit the Festival of Fear at Galey Farms and walk through their haunted house (but make sure you are going through the adult one, as the kids one might not be too thrilling). There are also other activities there like the Cornfield of Horror, Crazy Train and Madame Isabella’s Séance.

7. Watch Wicked Victoria on Government Street. This is a very family-friendly event and doesn’t require a lot of commitment. So if you’re downtown, stop by for a peak at the festivities while you’re at it.

8. Make some Halloween crafts. Remember how often you did those in elementary school? I mean, why not, right?

9. And finally, buy some candy and get prepped for those trick or treaters sure to knock on your door! Happy Halloween, HCXO.
