The Trendy New Way to Cleanse Your Face: Micellar Water

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Toronto chapter.

Do you ever wonder what life would be like if you didn’t need to wash your face to remove your make up? I can’t even imagine it! The whole idea just seems pretty wrong… without water, I don’t think I would feel like I’ve really cleaned my face (which is also the same feeling I get when I use a make up wipe out of desperation or exhaustion).

Well lovelies, meet the new beauty must have that’s been stirring up a storm, it’s called Micellar Water. Ever heard of it? I know I haven’t! A friend of mine recommended it to me a little while ago.

So, what do you say to a little beauty exploration? What is all the hype about? Here’s an even better question: What does it even do?

As you can see, there are already a bunch of big name brands with their own micellar waters, and that’s because it’s been around for a lot longer than you might think. Gaining popularity in France, micellar water is made up of micelles: tiny oil molecules suspended in soft water. This magical water has been favored by beauty experts, make up artists, models and us regular people alike. According to PopSugar, micellar water straddles the line between a toner and a cleanser, making it the perfect go-to for lazy or busy girls. With all that extra time taken out of your beauty routine, you’ll have more time to do what you do best!

According to the experts at Elle Magazine, micelles attract dirt, makeup, and oil. They draw out impurities without drying out your skin. Unlike regular cleansers that you need to put on and then rinse off while leaving your skin stripped of moisture and exposed to chemicals, micelles grab onto the dirt on your skin and dissolve them, almost magically. The result? A glowy, hydrated finish. Thanks to the gentle cleansing agents, micellar water is also perfect for all kinds of skin types! Sound too good to be true? I know I haven’t tried it yet, but I can definitely see the appeal.

What’s the difference between toner and micellar water?

To be honest, I have no clue! But the wonderful people at Into The Gloss have illuminated the subject tremendously! Basically, toner’s main job is to remove any impurities left after you’ve already cleansed your face. Toner is meant to be paired with a cleanser for optimal use, and can’t take centre stage in your beauty routine. According to the articles I’ve read about micellar water, it can take over as your primary go to for make up removal and cleansing.

How do I use it?

Relax, ladies! Using this product is apparently a breeze. All you need is a cotton pad or a cotton ball (maybe a couple of whichever you’re using if you’ve got a lot of make up on, or have waterproof make up on). Once you’re set, just saturate the cotton pad with the micellar water and gently sweep any make up and dirty away. After you’ve finished, all you have to do is throw away the ball/pad and you’re done! No rinsing, no wiping, and no scrubbing.

Are there any benefits to using micellar water instead of the cleanser I use now?

WELL…. from what I’ve read, the biggest benefit would be convenience, since no rinsing is required. There is virtually no mess to micellar water. Aside from the obvious such as hydrating and cleansing your skin at the same time, it also seems like the perfect traveling product! Imagine just carrying one bottle of this stuff instead of one cleanser, one toner, and one make up remover. You can definitely find other things to pack in your luggage besides facial products.

Where can I get micellar water and how much does it cost?

Micellar water isn’t hard to find! Just hit up the store you usually buy your facial products, such as Walmart, Sephora, Shoppers, or Pharma Plus. Price varies depending on the brand you choose, which I’m sure you already knew! Just for reference, the Sephora brand micellar water sells for about $15 for the 6.76 ml size, and $25 for the 13.5 ml size. Meanwhile, brands like L’Oreal and Garnier sell their micellar water’s for about $10 or less.

If you want to introduce micellar water to your beauty routine, I’d say to try the less expensive products first, just to feel it out. That way if you don’t end up liking it, you won’t feel as guilty for paying too much! If you end up loving it, then you can consider paying a little bit more for a higher quality product.

Final Thoughts:

Now that I’ve introduced you to micellar water, I definitely have to do some thinking, and maybe some searching for product reviews, to see if this product might be worth while! I can definitely see why it’s been blowing up the beauty scene though- we live in a world where everything is done  as fast as humanly possible, it just makes sense for our beauty routines to match that speed!

I'm a Shakespeare loving, eyebrow obsessing beauty junkie, who adores all things having to do with Harry Potter, delicious food, and good music. After 4 years I've finally graduated from the oh so wonderful, University of Toronto and am currently working toward a Masters of Information degree.  I'd like to think of myself as a modern day romantic with an unquenchable wanderlust. My current dream is to one day go on an international library hopping adventure! For an aspiring special collections librarian, that is definitely at the top of my list post-graduation. I am a frequent visitor of the ROM and love going see the Nutcracker during the holidays. As a Decemeber baby myself, I absolutely love the winter time, the snow, the holiday cheer, and the half coffee half hot chocolates I get from Timmys. As for music, my likes are pretty much across the board! From John Mayer to Sam Smith, Debussy to Duke Ellington, Xtina to today's pop hits, you'll find me somewhere in the middle. On a regular day, you'll probably find me at home with my dog Kacy on a Mad Men binge, or catching up with Once Upon a Time, The Good Wife, How To Get Away With Murder and Suits- ps. I love netflix!
