Holiday Glitter and Glam

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Toronto chapter.

Now that we’ve finally made it through the craziness that is the end of the semester and final exam season, we can FINALLY take a break and focus on what matters the most: Hibernating till school starts again! (Wouldn’t that be wonderful?)

If you’re thinking about adding some holiday cheer to your make up routine, I’ve got some simple tips on how to incorporate some glitter and sparkle without going overboard. The last thing you want to do is go to the work holiday party looking like this:

And let’s be honest ladies (and gents too!), who really has time for all of this? (Even though it is pretty darn gorgeous).

For my simple but fabulous glitter eye look, all you’ll need is some black liquid or gel eyeliner, and a glitter eye liner. I’ll be using my L’Oreal Lineur Intense in carbon black and my Lise Watier Eye Glitter Liner in cognac.

Right: L’Oreal Lineur Intense, Left: Lise Watier Eye Glitter Liner

For this look, follow your usual make up routine until you get to the part where you put on your eye liner. Start with a fresh eye and line them how you usually do. I like the winged/cat eye look.

Next, you’re going to take your glitter eye liner, loose glitter, or glitter shadow, and start lining above your black eye liner with an angled brush. Start from the middle of your eye. The glitter from the Lise Watier eyeliner didn’t come out as saturated as I wanted it to, so instead of sweeping the glitter liner onto my eye, I dabbed it on. You can gradually keep dabbing the glitter on until you’ve achieved your desired degree of glitz! Here’s what it should look like when you’re finished:

If you feel like glitter on the eyes is not enough, you can also rock a glitter gradient look on your nails! Here’s a short and simple tutorial on how to take your nails from grunge to glam:

Start off with a top coat, base coat, and glitter nail polish. I’ll be using Essence brand topcoat/base coat duo, and Nicole by OPI nail polish in Inner Sparkle.

Right: OPI, “Inner Sparkle,” Left: Essence Top Coat

First, you’re going to square off your nails with a nail file and put on a layer of the clear base coat. Your nails will look like this afterward:

Next, apply the glitter. When making the glitter gradient, I start off by dabbing the glitter heavily onto the tip first then making my way down, dabbing a few light and random spots on the bottom of the nail.

After that, just concentrate on putting more glitter on the top of your nail. Dabbing instead of stroking the brush is the key because it picks up more glitter and deposits it in one area. When you’ve finished, your nail should look something like this:

Repeat this step for the rest of your nails and make sure to wait until your nails are dry before putting on a top coat. Here’s what the rest of my nails look like post-top coat:

Even though these looks are super easy, people will think you spent hours doing your make up and nails! You’ll be the belle of the ball, glittering and shining your way through holiday parties, fam jams, and winter dates. Whether you decide to make a trip to the Christmas Market (which is SO worth it – it is absolutely breathtaking!) or decide to stay home with a warm cup of hot chocolate by the fireplace (or the fireplace channel, if you have it), you’ll be rockin’ that holiday glam for days. Happy Holidays and Happy New Year, everyone! I hope you all enjoy this time off to relax, have fun, and let loose!

PS: Here’s my gift to all you wonderful readers, a picture of my dog, Kacy, by the Christmas tree!

I'm a Shakespeare loving, eyebrow obsessing beauty junkie, who adores all things having to do with Harry Potter, delicious food, and good music. After 4 years I've finally graduated from the oh so wonderful, University of Toronto and am currently working toward a Masters of Information degree.  I'd like to think of myself as a modern day romantic with an unquenchable wanderlust. My current dream is to one day go on an international library hopping adventure! For an aspiring special collections librarian, that is definitely at the top of my list post-graduation. I am a frequent visitor of the ROM and love going see the Nutcracker during the holidays. As a Decemeber baby myself, I absolutely love the winter time, the snow, the holiday cheer, and the half coffee half hot chocolates I get from Timmys. As for music, my likes are pretty much across the board! From John Mayer to Sam Smith, Debussy to Duke Ellington, Xtina to today's pop hits, you'll find me somewhere in the middle. On a regular day, you'll probably find me at home with my dog Kacy on a Mad Men binge, or catching up with Once Upon a Time, The Good Wife, How To Get Away With Murder and Suits- ps. I love netflix!
