Could you see Lorde as the face of Alexander Wang?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Toronto chapter.

When Joan Didion was revealed to be the face of the Céline ad campaign in January, I was pleased as punch, and I was equally pleased to see Joni Mitchell starring in the Saint Laurent ad campaign. Not only are they creative wonders, but they’re a breath of fresh air in a world where advertising – especially fashion, focuses on youth. Both Didion and Mitchell have signature styles. Didion is known for her oversize sunglasses, and Mitchell for encapsulating the sixties.

Below are just a few of the countless artists such as Didion and Mitchell who’ve created their own style, and what brands/labels I could see them starring in an ad campaign for.

Gay Talese

Talese, apart from being one of the pioneers of New Journalism and an excellent writer, wears suits like no one else. A quick search for Armani suits shows, predictably, young male models. However, like Céline and Saint Laurent, labels could do well by embrace older faces such as Talese, who is 83.

Lorde

Lorde is a goth dream – a look I wish I could have pulled off as a teen. She’s always in black, but there have been instances where she’s gone outside of her comfort zone and added some colour. Although Alexander Wang isn’t “gothic,” his collections often feature a lot of black, such as the Fall/Winter 2015-2016 collection. Could you see it?

Fran Lebowitz

Writer and public speaker, Fran Lebowitz, definitely has a uniform: shirt, tailored suit-jacket and jeans. With her signature cuffed jeans, she would be a great look for a jean brand like Levis.

Louis C.K.

I’m pretty sure comedian Louis C.K lives in black t-shirts and jeans (and maybe the occastional sweater). He carries his trademark style well in his stand-up specials and on his show, Louie. He’s one of the few people known for wearing t-shirts – how has Hanes not jumped at this??

So, collegiettes – which cultural icons are modeling in your dream ad campaigns?
