Why You Should Start Saying “YES” More Often

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Penn chapter.

It’s always easier to say no to things. To deny that invitation for dinner because you are too tired, to miss that meeting for a new club because you’d rather be doing something else, to stick to your old habits instead of giving new ones a chance. But with the beginning of spring comes endless possibilities! The warm weather beckons in a fresh start, which is the best time to change your ‘no’ mentality. Now is the perfect time to start saying YES.

Say yes- to more social opportunities. Sometimes it’s easy to say no to social invitations- when you’re too tired to go out, or don’t feel like being social- we’ve all been there. You’ll thank yourself later if you broaden your social sphere. Invite people you don’t usually hang out with to go get coffee or lunch or dinner. Break from the monotony of your usual schedule. Go out of your way to schedule things with people you haven’t talked to in a while. It takes considerable effort to maintain relationships, and saying ‘yes’ will help expand your network. Having an active social life makes you feel more connected and helps your overall wellbeing.

Say yes- to more student- run activities. It’s easy to ignore the Facebook invites asking you to come to events for various clubs. Saying no because you’re too busy, have too much work, or simply don’t feel like walking all the way across campus- is often the simple option. But there’s also no downside to saying yes. What’s 15 minutes out of your day? Go to events, meet new people, and maybe even get some free food or learn something. Your peers will definitely appreciate your attendance and you’ll be glad you went.

Say yes- to a new experience. Have you ever been to an acapella concert? A ‘Bloomers’ or ‘Mask and Wig’ show? Have you ever been to a basketball game, swim meet, or tennis match? Say yes- go out and support other Penn students in various student group activities. It’s a great thing to do with friends, and a fun break from your normal routine. This is the one time in your life when you can experience fun, affordable entertainment and show support for your peers.

Say yes- to a positive lifestyle change. Spring is a chance for a fresh start. With summer comes warmer weather, so why not say ‘yes’ to a new healthy habit? Maybe start hitting the gym more often, or try a new fitness class. Take 1 hour out of your day to be more active. Maybe replace one meal a day with a healthier option- swap your burger for a salad at dinner. Maybe go to bed 1 hour earlier and get more sleep. These small changes can make you feel a lot better.

There’s no downside to saying ‘yes’ more often this Spring. Opening up more possibilities for yourself allows you more chances to be successful. Add this three letter word to your vocabulary and see what happens.
