What to Wear to a Theme Party!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Ottawa chapter.

It’s back to campus for all of us collegiettes out there! Back to school means a ton of new beginnings – new friends, new opportunities, and new classes. September is the ideal time for new social settings, including our perennial favorites – theme parties. Theme parties are a classic part of any collegiette university experience, whether they’re at a Rush event or a residence party. Finding a perfect combination of cute and theme-appropriate can be hard, but don’t worry, we have you covered – here are some breakdowns of the most common themed parties you’ll find on campus, and how to rock them.

The ABC party is probably the most popular of themed parties, with ABC standing for Anything-But-Clothes, which has party guests coming dressed in outfits made of everyday items. Look no farther than your local dollar store or Wal-Mart for supplies. Make an outfit out of caution tape, newspaper or wrapping paper, or colored streamers. Other great options are table cloths, garbage or paper bags, toilet paper, and old curtains. Duct tape is a great material because it now comes in cute patterns, like leopard print. Add some excitement to your outfit by using a string of tinsel or holiday lights!

We hear that the eighties were a great decade, and here’s your chance to dress up like your favorite cheesy workout. Grab a pair of leggings in a crazy color, top them with leg warmers or high socks and that neon pair of workout shorts you haven’t touched since grade ten gym class. On top, go for a bright tank top or tee shirt, and grab a crazy-colored hairband too. Cheap accessory stores like Ardenes and Claire’s are perfect for finding cute clothing that won’t break your budget. American Apparel is known for it’s already out-there colors and patterns, so pair those with your other accessories for a look that’s cute and crazy.

While high school may be over, you can always relive those four years at a High School Stereotype party. If you were a geek in high school, now’s your chance to be a cheerleader. This themed party has its guest dressing up as traditional high school cliches – jocks, football players, cheerleaders, geeks, etc. You can borrow outfits like cheerleader or football uniforms and jerseys from your friends if they have them, or pair a button down shirt with shorts and suspenders for a geek look. It doesn’t matter what clique you were in high school, now’s the time to mix it up.

Theme parties are a great way to meet new people and have fun! Whether you’re going to a Rush or residence party this semester, make sure you have some fun before midterms and academic stress sets in.
