What Living with Girls Taught Me

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Ottawa chapter.

Boys – you can’t live with them, you can’t live without them. If you ever grew up with a brother, cousin or close friend, you know that living with boys is like living in a permanent pig sty. It’s messy, it’s smelly, it can even be gross. But what about living with girls? Those of you who have sisters probably know, but for those of us who don’t it can be a mystery. Are girls as messy as boys or will it be like living in a nice, neat paradise? Will I butt heads with the girls I live with? Will I hate it? Will I love it? I was one of those people who had never lived with girls (except my mom) and this is what living with girls taught me:

Girls are messy too
If you think living with girls means you’ll finally be living in cleanliness, you may be wrong. I lived with 6 girls, and we were nowhere near clean. While it wasn’t the same, smelly mess that I was used to from my brother, it was still messy. Dishes were left out, bathrooms were makeup stained and we always seemed to have conflict over who should take out the garbage. While this may depend on the girl, I found it to be the case no matter if you were relatively neat and clean (like me) or if you’re a slob.

You always have someone to complain to
The nice part about always having girls around is you always have someone to complain to, especially about things only girls can relate to. Having the worst cramps and can barely walk to the kitchen? Your roommate will understand that. Annoyed that he didn’t text you back? She’ll understand. Having a girl around allows you to always have someone to turn to, and thus always be the person that they’ll turn to. You build a bond like no other.

If you need something, someone will have it
Spare tampon? Check. Cute shirt? Check. Living with a girl means that if you need something, there’s a chance she will have it to lend to you. Living with boys means that if you run out of pads or lipstick, you have to go to the store ASAP. With girls, you can wait until the next morning or later that afternoon.

Drama will happen whether you like it or not
When living with girls, there is bound to be drama. If your boyfriend basically lives with you in your room, you can bet your roommate will probably get angry. Drama and fights will happen, but that’s a part of living with girls. It’s best to try and work it out, rather than let it fester for days on end. It will create a more peaceful living situation for you and the rest of your roommates.

Girls will teach you a lot about yourself
I thought I knew everything there was to know about me. What I didn’t know was that my roommates would help me grow. With my roommates, I learned to be more patient and more caring. I learned that I do like the occasional night out in Ottawa, stumbling home at 2 am. I learned that I like sharing meals with others and learning about new foods that they like. They taught me a lot about myself, and for that I was lucky.

Living with girls can be different depending on who you are. What’s your experience? Leave a comment below!
