How to Transition Into Autumn

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Ottawa chapter.

Fall time is finally here! If you’re looking for some tips and tricks for transitioning your fashion and beauty look from summer to autumn, then this article is for you!

Hair

A popular fall trend for hair is to dye it one or two shades darker to deepen the colour, and help your hair blend into the gloomier fall vibe. If you aren’t looking to go darker, staying on the lighter is still an option, but a trim is a must (unless you just went for one)! Your hair has been out in the damaging sun, in pool chemicals and salty water all summer, it needs some love before the harsh winter sets in. Having silky, healthy hair goes well with the peaceful breezes of fall. In short, a good hair mask and a trim will do the trick if you aren’t ready to follow the dark hair trend.

Clothes

A big trend this season is a fan favorite, Denim! The hottest look of the season is sporting a darker coloured turtleneck with a vintage jean jacket over. Darker, and warmer colours will help you integrate your style with the falling leaves and the cloudy skies. Clothes should be worn in layers due to temperature fluctuations. Big cardigans, sweaters, blanket scarfs, knits, and jean jackets are great for this! Pants are a free for all for autumn, anything from light wash jeans, and black leggings, to floral patterned pants (and everything in between), will always look great with a cool leafy background. To stay trendy, loose fit clothing is the way to go, go for mom jeans, pajama style satin, sweats, and plaid trousers!

Make-up

Swap out those bright pinks for all the shades of red and darker nudes for lipstick. For an easy put together look, apply lengthening mascara and add a swipe of burgundy lipstick. A trendier look for fall is the rust orange eyeshadow, yellows, and reds, with a big bold black wing to finish the look. Pairing the warmer hues with crisp eyeliner is perfect for an autumn setting. If you’re feeling adventurous, a glossy lid will elevate your look, paired with a matte face and dark lips to really go all out on the trend.

Shoes

As always, the go-to shoes for fall are the classic ankle booties. These little short boots are gorgeous, comfortable, and come in so many different styles and colours. The best part about wearing these in the fall, is that you don’t have to worry about getting any snow inside of them or stepping in slushy puddles! Sleek boots, velour, velvet, and pleather are all good options for style and materials of boots. Heeled or not, booties will always finish off your look beautifully. If boots aren’t for you, oxfords or a nice white pair of converses will always do the trick!

Skincare

Start to moisturize! All those oil controlling products and harsh pool chemicals did a number on your skin this summer. Your skin will love a slightly heavier moisturizer, or the addition of an oil. Keep the heavier stuff for winter but start treating and preparing for the drastic drops in temperatures early. Putting on and taking off all the super dark lipsticks will also do a number on your lips. Remember to keep a lip balm with you and to use a moisturizing lip mask when they’re getting tender, the last thing you want is flakey lips in the winter!

Now you know all the tips to help you switch from a summer to an autumn look. As always, this article is not a rule book on how to dress for the season, just a guide to help you follow what’s trending. You’ll always look best in whatever you feel the most comfortable in. Happy fall time!
