If you’ve been on facebook lately, a photography project called Love Is. might have caught your eye. Katya Moussatova, a 3rd year student at uOttawa, is an avid photopgrapher and has begun expressing her passion and love for the art through this project. I had the pleasure of interviewing her about Love Is.

1. What’s your program and year?

Honours Specialization Economics with pending Health Science Minor, Fourth year in Sept.

2. How are you involved on campus?

Currently VP Academic for Economics Student Association and BOA Social Sciences for the SFUO.

3. What is Love Is. and how did it start?

Love Is. is a project that started after the university starting coming apart at the seams with negativity. Inspired by Humans of New York, I decided to ask university students about the one word that can be universally recognized: love. After taking a couple portraits, the project kicked off!

4. Has it became what you wanted it to become?

I honestly never expected it to become anything so I am pleasantly surprised to see how popular it has become! It’s humbling to see your art and your work enjoyed by so many people.

5. How did your passion for photography start?

It actually started after I decided to be a rebel and when I took the camera after I had been banned from touching it by my parents. I had taken some photos of my siblings and realized that I enjoyed capturing people at their best. After realizing that I was able to make people like themselves in their photos, my love for it grew!

6. What’s your favourite thing about Love Is. so far?

It has become a project that a lot of people have been able to relate to and that alone makes me happy. My favourite part is the excitement of people when I ask them if I can take their photo if they had already heard of it!

7. Is there a favourite Love Is. quote for somebody?

I honestly think that every single one I have posted is special in some way…especially considering that every person comes from a different place in life and their quotes are always somehow grounded in something that means a lot to them… even if it’s patios, pizza, or Suits.

8. What is love to you?

Love is forgiveness. The ability to take a deep breath and let it go.
