Best & Worst Back To School Health Habits

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Ottawa chapter.

Welcome back to campus collegittes! Time to start a new and fresh semester! What does that mean for most of us? A ton of back to school shopping, indulging in all new school supplies, and getting our wardrobe updated! As much as I love buying stationary and clothing, we tend to forget about our health at the beginning of the school year, and the habits we end up forming in the beginning of the year end up becoming long-term problems. Here are the top best and worst health habits of students.

Worst:

1- The Cafeteria

Caf Food: it’s the bane of our culinary existence. I get it, that sloppy looking shawarma or the really cardboard looking piece of pizza is just all you want sometimes (half because of the sheer convenience and half because crappy food can sometimes fills a weird void, am I right?) but is it what you need? I am the first person in line to indulge, but try and keep your cafeteria food to a minimum. Maybe try setting one meal of the week for eating in the caf or even set a certain limit on your Flex Card per month.

2- Over Drinking

It’s that time of year, parties on parties on parties! Not only is OVER drinking bad for your health (and I do mean calorie heavy) but your wallet takes a pretty big hit too. This isn’t to say that you should never drink again in your life, or that going to parties this 101 week is a bad idea. All we’re saying is consider limiting your spending on booze, and maybe fill some water in that solo cup for a night or two. You can still have fun at a party without having to drink!

Best:

1- Drinking Water

Buy yourselves a water bottle, ladies. Seriously, do it. Once you have one pretend it’s like one of your limbs. Take that baby everywhere with ya! There’s nothing like being hydrated. Drinking water helps you focus, keeps your body cleansed and is literally the cheapest drink out there.

2- Cooking For Yourself

Inviting your roomies, friends or significant other over for a home cooked meal is a great way to have fun and stay healthy. Buying the ingredients yourself, preparing the meal and then sharing it with the people you love is so satisfying. Not only is this great for your health because you’re picking hardy ingredients, but spending time being happy and laughing with others is great for your body, mind and soul!

Daughter, sister, student, friend. I have a fond love for good board games, napping and tea. I consider myself to be a professional apple cutter.
