Are we turning into Social Media Monsters?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Ottawa chapter.

Social media is just about everywhere today. You know that thing you do when you roll over in bed at 4am to reach out for your phone to check your snapchat/instagram, or the hours you spend on Facebook browsing your newsfeed instead of working on that project, or the million tweets you re-post in a day? it’s all part of the game. Yes the game that has now made each of us its pawn.

Social media has some very high highs and can take you to extreme lows as well. Here are 6 things Social Media does to us:

Social Media makes you Lonely

Well if you haven’t noticed it, you have way more Facebook friends than you have in real life! Most of us are so wrapped up in our social media bubble that we are constantly trying to prove to the world that we’re busy, important and having a good time!

It is responsible for the increasing pounds on you

With #FoodPorn and #Foodstagram taking over the world and food bloggers all over the place posting delicious food from around the world on Instagram, social media makes you crave all that deliciousness eventually making you give into the temptations the world has to offer and making the pounds on the scale go haywire.

It makes us want what we don’t need

Certain posts we see online can drive us insane! Those shoes- OH MY GOD! Your life depends on them! You’d sell your soul for that sole! You know what I mean. It make us needy, craving what we do not need thereby leaving us no choice but to give into our obsession as the only way to find peace.

On the flip side, through an incurable addiction, social media too has a couple of highs.

Helps you stay in touch with friends from around the globe

With the help of social media, especially Facebook, you can rekindle that friendship with that 1st grade best friend or get nostalgic about childhood stories by getting in touch with that primary school teacher. Social media is a great way to stay connected with friends from all over the globe.

Gives you a chance to meet the love of your life

With sites like Tinder, Friendster and dozens of people reconnecting with their friends’ long time crushes over Facebook, social media gives you the chance to meet your special someone and fall head over heels in love with them!

Keeps you upbeat with the hot trends

Let’s not forget how fashion forward social media can make you! With fashion weeks taking over Instagram and FROW fashion bloggers sharing tips and tricks to keep you upbeat with the quirkiest styles, social media keeps you on top with everything that’s trending

Let’s not forget there are always 2 sides to a coin. We as humans need to know where to draw the line. Many of us spend more time on Twitter than in sunlight and that definitely needs to stop. We have to prioritize our life to ensure that social media is a part of our world but doesn’t take over it.

What is becoming increasingly interesting today is how advertisers use social media to get in touch with their consumer base. While it is an excellent media platform, the over elaborate advertising on social media is now tricking the consumer and making him want what he does not need. Therefore, be careful boys and girls. Be smart. Use this gift to your advantage but don’t let it get the best of your life! Do not let social media make you asocial.
