We’re officially one month into 2017! For many this new year means a new start. Whatever your resolutions are one good way to start off the year is to get organized. A popular way to do this is by keeping a bullet journal! Whether you already have one or are just starting here are 5 helpful tips to keeping a bullet journal.

1. Do some research

Before you start you might be wondering what is a bullet journal? A bullet journal is essentially whatever you want it to be! It can be your to-do list, a place to write reminders, your daily planner, even a sketchbook. There is no right or wrong way to keep a journal, but you can check out Bullet Journal to get you started.

2. Find inspiration

Once you figure out the basics of bullet journaling it’s helpful to remember that there are tons of different ways to keep a journal. Head to Pinterest, Instagram, or Tumblr and search ‘bullet journal’ to find some cool examples to give you ideas for what to do with yours own. Check out some of these Instagram accounts for ideas!

3. Pick your materials

As far as materials go, again, it depends on what works best for you! If you want to make sure everything will look nice and neat a gridded notebook might work best for you. If you want to have more freedom to lay everything out then a notebook with plain paper might be better. Some popular brands are Moleskine and Leuchtturm1917. You can also add a pop of color to your journal with colored pencils, markers, washi tape, or even magazine clippings.

4. Decide what to journal about

When it comes to the content of your journal it can be helpful to have a calendar from month to month, and a small area sectioned off from day to day. What else you choose to document depends on what you’re interested in keeping track of. If you want to try and drink more water you can log how much water you drink a day, or if you want to have a more regular sleep schedule you can keep track of when you go to bed or how many hours of sleep you’re getting a night. Making a key of symbols can help make tracking things a bit easier. The possibilities are endless!

5. Have fun with it!

One main key to starting a journal and keeping it is to have fun with it! Try some funky lettering, put in fun quotes, whatever feels right to you. Take a cute insta of your journal to show off your work to your friends! The more fun you have with it the more excited you’ll be to journal every day.
