Thought Catalog: The Diary I Didn’t Write

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

We have all those websites that we get caught up surfing for hours on end. Some people have their favorite bloggers, others rely on StumbleUpon to guide their Internet adventures. For me, Thought Catalog is the site I find myself wrapped up in nine times out of ten. For some, writing thoughts down in a diary is a relaxing exercise that helps them put things into perspective. Just the thought of attempting to articulate my feelings on paper is enough to give me a mild anxiety attack. That’s where Though Catalog comes in.

Thought Catalog is a collection of user-submitted writings that cover everything and anything. It is, as its name implies, a catalog of uncensored thoughts. From funny lists to heart-wrenching anecdotes, Thought Catalog has exactly what you’re looking for. For someone like me who can’t put her feelings into words, reading about someone else’s similar experiences helps me realize that I’m not crazy and I’m not alone. Much of the time, as I read these articles, I wonder how the author got inside my head when I thought I was the only person in the world that had ever felt this way. It’s the perfect way to reflect on my inner feelings without forcing myself to put them into words.

Some of these articles have made me think about things in a completely different way. Ever feel like you’re drowning in a pile of college work simply to graduate and find a 9-5 job? Then check out Brianna Wiest’s article “The Problem with Average Not Being Good Enough.” She made me realize that following my own path is just as commendable as following the “typical” path of the undergraduate student. I don’t have to be exactly what the average political science major is, I can alter my goals and activities to be perfect reflection of my personality and who I am, rather than who everyone else expects me to be.

Feeling overwhelmed and like you could cry at the drop of a hat? Tiarra Rossman compiled a list of incredible phrases to help make you find strength in yourself again. I was shocked to find how easy it was to find my inspiration again just by clicking on a link. These phrases disregard the cliché quotes all your friends always throw around and cut straight to the point. Sometimes, the deepest feelings can only be said simply.

Simply bored of studying and looking for an interesting way to procrastinate? “22 Sweet Life Hacks That You’ll Totally Use” by Michael Koh provided me with a good seven minutes (depending on how fast of a reader you are) of “Oh my goodness, duh!” moments. These life hacks are just fun easy things that will keep you occupied. If you’re feeling really ambitious, you could even try them out!

Whatever your mood, feeling, or need, Thought Catalog has an article for you. I’m warning you in advance though, once you start scrolling through their hundreds of pages, you’ll be caught up for hours sending your favorite articles to your best friends and saying, “This is so my life.”
