The Struggles of Having Long-Distance Friends

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

Going to college can be tough on friendships. Many of your friends may head off in different directions. If you’re lucky, you might go to the same university as some of your close friends. Or you may be hours apart.

My friends and I spread out all over the place when we went to college. In fact, some even took the leap and went overseas. Let me tell you, it’s a real struggle:

The time difference.

Communication with friends in a different time zone can be tricky. It may mean waking up at ungodly hours or staying up past your bedtime to talk.

Random things remind you of them and you Snapchat/text them about it.

The show you watch together might come on television, or a song you always jam to might come on the radio. You want be together watching or listening, but instead you immediately Snapchat them a picture with the caption “miss you!”

Trying to find cute ways to keep in touch.

You might try to write letters or send care-packages. It’s hard when you’re both so busy, but you find ways to make it work.

Needing to have a quick chat or wanting to cuddle.

The boy you’ve been eyeing finally talked to you or you haven’t been feeling your best lately and want an esteem-booster…only you have to wait several hours for her to be awake.

Skype.

It never seems to work when you want it to. You keep telling each other you’ll have a virtual date soon.

Visits are expensive.

Planning trips to see each other require a lot of brain power and money–something most college students don’t have.

In the end, you know that, no matter how far you are from each other, nothing could change your friendship!
