Follow the Frog: How YOU Can Help Save the Rainforest

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

We all know that our environment has what scientists call a “grim future.” There are so many great ways to lessen your impact on the environment, but lately it seems that the chicest thing to do is go on a service trip and live out the “cliché gringo fantasy.” Jetting off to the jungles of Central and South America and becoming one with the tribesmen, only to come back a little tanner and with some seriously cool handmade jewelry, is a great experience, sure, but what does that actually do to help the environment?

In reality, helping the rainforest (and its native people) is so much simpler! Maybe you’ve seen this video floating around the internet. The Rainforest Alliance put together this clever video on how to approach saving the rainforest in a realistic and easy way.

Who knew that doing your part to ensure that the rainforest has a future on this planet was as easy as switching up some of the brands that you buy? Just keep an eye out for certain brands.

Grabbing a snack? Try opting for a Clif bar, Chiquita or Dole fruit, and anything Lipton. Naked juices and Dove chocolate, two of my own personal favorites, are members of the alliance too! Retailers like Costco, Holiday Inn, Staples, and Whole Foods, even American Airlines and British Airways, have all proudly stamped their brand with the frog.

Craving an iced coffee and a cozy place to get some work done? Rao’s Coffee, right in the center of town, is a member of the alliance, so you can go in to get your caffeine fix and a little good karma for helping to ensure the future of our rain forests! Keep an eye out for this cute little guy next time you’re out shopping, Collegiettes!

Check out the Rainforest Alliance website for a complete list of brands, retail locations and online retailers who are members, as well as more tips on how to green your home, office or classroom, travel greener and even how to be greener on campus.

Don’t forget to follow the frog!
