Fifth Harmony: Feminist Role Models for Our Generation

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

The word “feminist” is heard everywhere in 2015: in daily conversation, on social media, and all over the entertainment industry. While feminism is defined as the belief that women should be treated equally to men, many have misinterpreted it as advocacy for misandry and female dominance. Young people are very impressionable, so it is very important that we have positive and well-informed role models. Fifth Harmony, one of the top girl groups in the world right now, is composed of five talented and down-to-earth young women who stand united as feminists. They recognize the importance of feminism to themselves and their fans, and aren’t afraid to say it. Here are some reasons why 5H are some of the best feminist role models in the public eye right now, and why we need more young celebrities like them.

1. Their biggest hit single, “Worth It”, is all about female confidence.

This isn’t just another dance song: Fifth Harmony uses their power as viral pop artists to encourage women to embrace their sexuality and not apologize for their strength.

2. Actually, most of their songs are all about female confidence.

From their first single, “Miss Movin’ On,” to the girl-power anthem “BO$$”, these songs remind girls that they are in charge of our own lives.

3. Fifth Harmony proudly calls themselves feminists.

Lots of celebrities beat around the bush when it comes to feminism, because the word itself has become taboo. People will say they support equality, but they wouldn’t call themselves feminists. However, these five girls aren’t afraid to state their affiliation, and that’s so important for their fans to hear.

4. They won’t back down from being politically active.

Often it is assumed that young people, especially girls, are shallow and shouldn’t concern themselves with what’s going on in the world. The members of Fifth Harmony says screw that.

5. One of their main goals as artists is to promote love and appreciation amongst women.

Women should not be in constant competition; one woman’s beauty and power should encourage another woman rather than upset her. The 5H ladies have said countless times that this mentality is one of their biggest priorities.

6. They stand up against slut-shaming.

In today’s society, women face so much adversity for not just being sexuality active, but dressing or acting in certain ways that are considered “slutty”.

7. They partnered with DoSomething.org for their #ImABoss campaign.

The purpose of the campaign is to lift up the self-esteem of young girls everywhere.

8. The Fifth Harmony girls are always there for their fans.

They constantly spread love on social media and in person. These young women use their fame for nothing but good, and are conscious of the responsibility they hold as celebrities to send positive messages to the world. We need more role models like them around!
