7 Fun Facts About Chancellor Subbaswamy You Might Not Know

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

Have you heard the saying “everyone loves UMass– they either go here and love it, or don’t and wish they did”? Well, I just made that saying up, and while it might not always be the case, I believe it holds some truth. UMass is an amazing school, and I know someone who would agree with me– the chancellor of UMass. I’m talking about the big man on campus, the one who’s always shouting “GO UMASS!”– Kumble R. Subbaswamy. Every Minuteman knows the name, but do they really know anything about him? Let’s find out!

1. He is the 30th leader of UMass Amherst.

2. He served as the provost of the University of Kentucky before coming to UMass.

3. He has a PhD in physics– that smartie pants.

4. He has his own Wikipedia page. He ~made~ it.

5. He was born in the city Bangalore in India.

6. Yes, it is true – he has a Twitter.

7. He does really live on top of Orchard Hill in that big white house. Not THE White House – but who knows? Maybe someday. His house was built in 1884.

Have a great semester at UMass and look out for Kumble on campus!

U Mass Amherst

I'm now a senior at UMass Amherst & started Her Campus my freshman year. I had just transferred from Clemson University in South Carolina and it allowed me to find friends immediately. HC also helped open myself up to a passion of mine - journalism and writing. Additionally, Her Campus helped me meet people who inspired me to get more involved on campus - which is why I joined Greek life as well as got a job for student activities and involvement. As sappy as it is, HC has changed my college experience in so many ways. Besides HC, I am a double major in journalism and biology, and work as a tour guide and for Student Activities & Involvement. I am the VP of Alumnae Relations of Sigma Kappa Beta Eta, involvement in a number of other organizations, and I love mozzarella sticks and Nutella (but not together!)
